2010 Monterey 400 SY

Reviewed by Richard Crowder

Monterey 400 SY

Boatdealers.ca had an opportunity to test the new Monterey 400SY Sport Yacht at this year’s Miami International Boat Show. Monterey’s knowledgeable and affable Development Engineer, Nick Engels, ever so smoothly and gently eased the well-equipped demonstrator out of the confined slip area, out into the Intracoastal and handed us the controls.

The 400SY looks and feels huge and roomy. When viewed from the stern at the dock, the first impression of the 400SY is the impressive sweeping line it assumes while at rest, the size of its extended swim platform, and the inviting, spacious layout of the cockpit. There is ample seating for more than you would normally ever want to entertain on its U-shaped stern lounge which converts to a transom sun lounge, plus an L-shaped chaise lounge with backrest located opposite the helm. The helm seat has a flip-up forward bolster and folding armrest. A hardtop with full canvas enclosure is standard.

The cockpit table is on a concealed flip-out, hinged stainless steel pedestal opposite the wet bar with sink, trash receptacle, storage, and refrigerator. A Kenwood satellite-ready AM/FM, CD player, MP3 adapter, IPOD capability stereo with four speakers, subwoofer, amplifier, and with both dash and transom remotes services the cockpit.

The helm of the 400SY is well laid out behind the custom wheel with electronic steering control and complete with the most necessary and up-to-date digital readouts, and ready to accept one of three choices of optional electronic navigation packages.

A companionway door with sliding screen leads to the 6’5” headroom of the cabin below. Nice touches here include a wine chiller, monogrammed linen and dinette set with silverware, decorator pillows, wood mini-blinds, synthetic wood flooring and sapele wood trim. The galley is complete with all of the conveniences you would expect. Central vac is standard as is 23,000 BTU dual-zone reverse cycle air conditioning/heating plus a surround sound home theatre system with DVD player and a 26” flatscreen LCD TV.

The forward stateroom with privacy door has two cedar-lined hanging lockers and a quilted covered, inner sprung mattress island berth. The forward head has a separate shower with seat and access doors from both the forward stateroom and main cabin. The aft stateroom with privacy door offers twin berths with filler cushions. The aft head with integral shower is accessed from the aft stateroom.

Our test boat was equipped with the maximum available power – twin Volvo Penta IPS600 diesels producing 435 hp each and with joystick control. An 8 KW diesel generator is standard. With the IPS (pod drives) with joystick control, driving and handling a boat of this size and weight is simply a breeze in whatever wind and water conditions.

In a light chop in a small bay off the Intracoastal Waterway (ICW) the 400SY accelerated easily, effortlessly, and almost imperceptibly onto plane and quickly up to its maximum speed of 45 mph at 3525 RPM WOT (Wide Open Throttle), while consuming almost 44 (US) gallons per hour. The most efficient cruising speed was determined to be just over 33 mph at 2800 RPM while consuming just under 25 (US) gallons per hour. The 400SY is smooth, relatively quiet, solid feeling, and dry with totally predictable handling characteristics.

If this size and style of boat is on your shopping list, take a good look into the 400SY.
