Jerry Cartwright, the designer of the Cartwright 44, spent enough time at sea to know the necessity of having an enormously strong vessel that can be easily sailed by one or two people. He also understood the need for a vessel that has good speed for fast passages, with comfort for 4-6 persons and all the extra amenities. Without doubt, this Cartwright 44 has lived up to her designer's intent.
All-round cruising comfort and world-class construction can be found in this Canadian-built vessel. As a custom yacht builder since 1978, Peter Karadi (The Custom Yacht Builder in Whitby, Ontario) prides himself on building exceptional yachts for discriminating sailors...boats that can be taken anywhere in comfort, style and safety with a generous measure of speed and grace. These vessels are not “Tupperware” blue water cruisers; they are very strong, overbuilt, one-piece hulls with fibreglassed hull-to-deck joints. What this means is no noise and no flexing underway…comfort and safety all the way!
With a custom interior and a great layout, "Free Radical" is a real joy to sail. She has a flat deck and deep cockpit for safety. There is a Profurl roller-furling system on both the 130% Genoa (1999) and the cutter staysail (1999). The full-batten mainsail is loose-footed with a full roach and travels up and down the mast with ease on her Harken bat-car system.
With sleeping room for 6 and two heads, there is plenty of room for comfortable living. The forward private double cabin (with custom mattress) had its own head with shower, and plenty of storage and locker space. The U-shaped settee around the salon table provides entertainment space. the settee has very wide seats and can really be used for sleeping. The salon cushions were designed to be comfortable for sitting for extended periods. All the cushions were new in April of 2009.
"Free Radical" was also outfitted with long-term live-aboard and long distance cruising in mind. Here is a list of only a few of her many notable appointments.
