Boat Review by: Richard Crowder
The FS 1610 is the smallest of three “Fish & Ski” models in Lowe’s Deep-V Fish/Sport sub-series of its twelve model all-welded aluminum Deep-V series ranging from almost seventeen feet to just short of nineteen feet. All three Fish & Ski models are new this year, each growing by five-inches in length. The FS 1610, which replaces last year’s 165, not only grows the five inches to sixteen feet, ten inches in length but its beam increases a significant thirteen inches to eighty-two.
These twelve models are part of this long established Lebanon, Missouri boat builder’s 2015 line-up of sixty-seven models of Deep-V, Bay, Mod-V Bass/Crappie, Utility, Hunt, and Jon boats ranging from ten to twenty-two feet. Lowe also offers a deck boat plus eighteen models of pontoon boats.
The intent of the three FS models is versatility; versatility to allow you to enjoy great watersports capability without sacrificing any fishability and the FS 1610 certainly lives up to these objectives. In a nod to family flexibility plus cruising and watersports enjoyment, the FS 1610 features very pleasing-to-the-eye warm, two-tone interior colour highlighting, full surround inside gunnel coaming vinyl-clad padding, plus a high, three-piece, walk-thru windshield with rounded corners and made even higher for further weather protection by being mounted on a raised extrusion.
Also upgraded for an aesthetically pleasing touch are the two consoles with their modern concave design plus a faux-stitching look to the topside eyebrows. An added small knick-knack open storage spot is located within side of the passenger console in addition to the locking glovebox plus open floor-level storage within this console.
The driver’s helm is also black with two large standard gauges (tachometer and speedometer) flanking two smaller ones (trim and fuel gauges). The steering wheel is a black “soft-grip” model. Standard entertainment is provided by a Jensen MS30 AM/FM stereo with Bluetooth® compatibility, two speakers, and a dash-mounted waterproof LCD display with LED backlit buttons. A 12-volt accessory plug is provided.
The helm seat, one of three two-toned, black and gray fishing seats is also equipped with a locking pedestal and slider. Further standard comfort is found in the padded backrests found in the bow area on the forward faces of the two consoles. Charcoal carpet is standard flooring.
The three standard seats can be moved to any of the five floor-mount locations; three in the cockpit and one each on the bow and stern casting decks. The stern casting deck also offers flexibility for fishing or cruising in that port and starboard padded jump seats flip up out of this deck for extra passenger-carrying capacity. The FS 1610 is rated to carry six people to a maximum of 995 pounds.
Fishing enthusiasts are also well taken care of in the FS 1610. Centred between the two stern deck jump seats is a standard 24-gallon aerated livewell with built-in bait bucket. As for rod holders, a locking port side rod locker holds seven-footers and a locking in-floor locker beneath the centre opening of the windshield has tubes for five rods up to seven feet. More open storage is under the starboard gunnel and two in-floor lockers with hinged lids are in the bow deck.
Lowe offers many options for the FS 1610 to personalize your boat to enhance the enjoyment of your prime activities of choice be that fishing or watersports/cruising, or both. Applicable to all activities would be your choice of several canvas options from mooring covers to full stand-up top with enclosure. Choose also from a black painted or galvanized custom trailer with many additional optional trailer features. You can also choose from several different metallic and two-tone hull colour choices and accenting.
Perhaps select the optional tan interior and from an incredible twenty-two choices of pedestal seating options from basic to deluxe. You may also want an all-vinyl cockpit with vinyl flooring in a couple of different colour choices. A chrome accent or deluxe chrome steering wheel is available as is a tilt wheel and hydraulic steering. Extra Jensen speakers are available or go for the Polk PA450 stereo upgrade.
Options specific for the fishing enthusiasts include a recirculating livewell with timer, twelve choices of bow and/or dash-mounted 3, 5, 7, or 9-inch Lowrance fishfinders, a MotorGuide® or Minn Kota trolling motor, plus a single or dual bank battery charger. The watersports/cruising enthusiasts may want one of two choices of bow rails with a bow cushion set and probably the swim platform and removable ski pylon. Engine choices include a Mercury® 60, 75, or 90 horsepower FourStroke. The boat is rated for a maximum of 115 horsepower.
“Endless Possibility” is how Lowe describes its new FS 1610.
