Boat Review by: Richard Crowder
“Starting with just two models and a vision,” today, Monterey Boats of Williston, Florida, an independently owned and family operated company, is celebrating its thirtieth anniversary with the introduction of three new models; the 196 SkiFish, 268 SS Cuddy Cabin, and the 360 Sport Coupe, subject of this review. Matching its anniversary number, these three new boats brings to thirty the number of models offered by Monterey in 2015, available in six series of runabouts, sport boats, deck-style boats, cruisers and yachts from eighteen feet to forty-one feet.
This new 360 Sport Coupe is one of seven models in Monterey’s Cruisers & Yachts series ranging from twenty-seven to forty-one feet. And this new 360 Sport Coupe is special in that it is Monterey’s only boat in which the hardtop is joined to the windshield and side windows, thus making it truly a Sport Coupe and eliminating the need for clear canvas connecting panels between the hardtop and windshield sections.
This fibreglass hardtop has electric sliding side window sections for ventilation plus an electric sliding forward centre section to assist in easier access to the foredeck aided by a full staircase built into the sliding cabin door which is also equipped with a sliding screen. Port and starboard wet arm windshield wipers are standard.
The one level cockpit of the 360 SC is unique in its features and layout with dual double-wide electric sliding helm and companion seats both with two-way flip-down backs and flip-up bolsters which allow both forward and aft-facing seating with footrests. When facing aft, both of these seats face conveniently located bars with ice keeper, bottle storage, and slide out storage, and on the starboard side, in addition to this is a wetbar with slide out trash container, refrigerator, and stainless steel sink with designer faucet – all standard equipment.
Aft of the portside bar is a fully upholstered L-shaped lounge/sofa which fills the transom across to the starboard side level walk-through to the upper level large integrated and molded swim platform. A lower-level partial platform extends out even further with a centre-mounted recessed and covered telescoping stainless steel swim ladder. The backrest of the transom portion of the lounge folds forward to allow aft-facing lounging or fully flat for sun lounging. A standard triangular cockpit table with hi-lo pedestal and movable base serves this lounge.
A leather-wrapped, tilting steering wheel with three paired and classy chromed stainless steel spokes faces the upscale Titanium gelcoated dash of the 360 SC complete with 4-inch colour digital engine displays, a huge front-and-centre Raymarine GS165 GPS/chartplotter with Fusion-Link, Raymarine 260 VHF, Lenco trim tab Autoglide System, RMK-9 remote keypad, plus CP100 Downvision network sounder. Standard stereo is a Fusion AM/FM with iPod dock, MP3 adapter, dash and cabin remotes, six speakers, and Sirius Satellite equipped.
The cabin is refreshingly bright with huge hullside windows extending virtually full-length on both sides of the convertible V-berth/dinette allowing lots of natural lighting inside. A solid wood electric hi-lo table with hinged sections to accommodate cocktails or full dining serves to convert this V-berth area which is complete with a cedar-lined hanging locker and standard 32-inch LED flatscreen TV with DVD Home Theatre, four speakers, and sub-woofer.
The portside head compartment includes an electric head, sink with shower wand, and shower seat. The galley opposite features a single burner electric stove, refrigerator, stowable coffee maker, microwave, and stainless steel sink. Monogrammed towels and dinette set with silverware are provided. Central vac is standard. Flooring is synthetic wood. The mid-cabin offers a huge berth with full-width pillow, quilted mattress cover, storage cabinet, and privacy curtain.
Other notable standard equipment on the 360 SC includes a 40-Amp battery charger, electric engine hatch, vinylester hull barrier coat, anchor windlass with anchor, rope, chain, and washdown, foredeck sunpads with hinged backrests, dockside water, and hot and cold transom shower. Twin gasoline sterndrive power for the 360 SC is available from either MerCruiser or Volvo starting at twin 300 horsepower up to twin 380 horsepower with Bravo III or Duo-Prop outdrives respectively and available with Axius or Joystick respectively. Monterey tests indicate cruising speed variations of between 25 and 30 mph depending on your choice of these engines.
Notable available options include an aft bimini with cockpit enclosure, cockpit electric grill, SeaDek or woven flooring, icemaker, and flatscreen TV and TV satellite system, stereo upgrade, radar, swim platform propane grill, SeaDek inlay, and underwater lights, remote spotlight, reverse cycle air conditioning/heating for the cabin and/or cockpit, bow thruster, and generator.
In Monterey’s words, the 360 Sport Coupe offers “Charismatic Elegance and Stylish Sophistication.”
