Boat Review by: Richard Crowder
The HD 270 is one of three brand new “deck style” bowrider models in a brand new series for 2016 for this Cadillac, Michigan builder. Four Winns has created this new series, “By combining the best elements of our entire line up.” The three new models in two sizes are the HD 240 OB and HD 270 OB, both outboard powered, and the HD 270, which is sterndrive powered and the subject of this review.
In all, for 2016, Four Winns offers a comprehensive selection of fifty-two models of bowriders, cuddy cabins, tow sport boats, and express cruisers in seven series ranging from eighteen to forty-four feet.
Even though this review concentrates on the HD 270 sterndrive powered model, virtually all observations, specifications, layout, standard and optional equipment, and features apply equally to the HD 270 OB outboard powered version. In fact, think of the outboard version as having the motor centrally mounted on the trailing edge of the large integrated swim platform of the sterndrive version and you would get the picture.
All specifications of the two models are in essence identical except the outboard powered boat with motor weighs approximately 500 pounds (230 Kg) less plus you gain an enormous amount of increased storage space under the stern/transom seat where the sterndrive engine would reside in the HD 270 sterndrive version. Even the MSRP pricing on the two versions are remarkably similar and both versions are available with RS and SS upgrade packages.
The HD 270 rides on Four Winns’ Stable-Vee® SC running surface, the latest iteration of this company’s proprietary design where the “SC” stands for “split chines” creating a “Stepped running surface (which) reduces friction/drag while underway.”
With lots of freeboard, the HD series offers safe, secure seating for all on board, especially in the bow area where U-shaped full surround bench seating with high, fully padded side bolstering allows both lounging and seating. Finished storage is found under both side bench seats plus behind the driver’s side backrest. An integrated, insulated cooler hides under the forward section seat cushion. A large foredeck platform conceals an anchor locker with standard telescoping beach boarding ladder.
Seating fills the complete cockpit except for the starboard side walk-thru over the transom to the swim platform. The driver and passenger are pampered with matching Four Winns’ adjustable ComfortRide, swivel, reclining bucket seats complete with flip-up forward bolsters, armrests, and suspension system. An L-shaped contoured bench seat fills the aft port side and across the stern and another bench seat is aft of the driver’s bucket.
Portable coolers reside under both of the side bench seats and more storage is under the stern bench seat. Not one but two in-floor finished storage lockers will take care of all of your watersports paraphernalia, safety gear, picnic baskets, etc. A double-wide rear-facing transom “sun seat” is back-to-back with the cockpit stern bench seat.
The attractive two-toned, hand-fitted, top-stitched upholstery at the helm of the HD 270 features tilt steering, plus Faria fog-resistant gauges including all normal sterndrive instrumentation plus an hour meter and depth sounder with water and air temperature readouts. The passenger helm opens to an enclosed head compartment complete with sink, vanity, mirror, port light window, and standard Porta potti.
Six choices of Classic Color Band hull colours are available as standard equipment with solid hull colours optionally available. Other notable standard equipment includes a ski tow eye, stainless steel beverage holders and assist handles, dual batteries, an AM/FM stereo with iPod®/MP3 port, Bluetooth® Connectivity and four speakers, plus a Four Winns custom-matched tandem-axle trailer.
Your choice of MerCruiser® or Volvo Penta® sterndrive power from 300 to 380 horsepower is available with Bravo III or Duo-Prop outdrives respectively and with DTS (Digital Throttle and Shift) or EVC (Electronic Vessel Control) optionally available.
Other notable optional equipment includes pull-up cleats, bow and stern showers, underwater lighting, swim platform matting, hinged wakeboard tower with bimini, bow filler cushions, table with bow, cockpit, & swim platform mounts, snap-in carpet or Cabana Mat flooring, electric toilet, refreshment/galley center to replace the starboard cockpit bench seat, walk-thru bow doors, trim tabs, premium sound system, bimini top, bow, and cockpit covers, Raymarine GPS, plus trailer upgrades.
The Four Winns HD 270 – a new model in a new series and a new way to enjoy family days on the water.
