Boat Review by: Richard Crowder
At just under twenty-four feet, the 239 FS (Family Sportsman) is the newest and largest in Key West’s four model FS series starting at just under nineteen feet. Key West’s objective with this FS series is to cater to what it noticed as “more emphasis on family activities such as water sports and cruising and less importance placed on pure fish ability.”
To this end, the FS series, and particularly the 239 FS is standard equipped with more “family friendly” and cruising amenities than Key West’s traditional series of five center console models ranging from fifteen to twenty-four feet. In all, Key West offers a total of twenty-four models of Skiff, Bay Reef, Dual Console, and Center Consoles from fifteen to thirty-five feet.
Key West Boats of Ridgeville, South Carolina is proud of its “no wood / no rot” construction with a foam injected fibreglass stringer system, lightweight coring materials, directional high strength fibreglass, closed cell positive foam flotation, and molded non-skid inner liner, all backed with a 10-year structural hull warranty.
Family-friendly enhanced seating throughout the 239 FS is the most notable difference between this and the more traditional series of center console offerings. A full-width, well upholstered, padded, and contoured stern bench seat with cushioned backrest provides comfortable seating for three. Up front, the same style of two-toned cushions provides U-shaped seating in the bow area. In addition, a forward-facing cushioned seat is provided in front of the console.
All of this seating contains large, finished storage compartments beneath the removable cushions; some of this storage being insulated for practical use as fish boxes. The forward in-floor fish box is macerated with overboard drain. Beneath the centre stern seat cushion is a 20-gallon livewell with standard high speed pick-up pump which may be optionally upgraded to recirculating. Cockpit bolsters are also standard equipment on the 239 FS.
A double-wide folding-bolster leaning post at the helm converts to twin seats with backrests. A console-mounted footrest at the helm is conveniently fitted with multiple storage compartments. A door in the centre console opens to reveal a change room within and may be optionally fitted with a Porta-potti. The helm is fitted with a tinted windshield and a stainless steel grabrail.
Other notable standard equipment includes a port side molded swim platform complete with a stainless steel ladder, auto-retract trim tabs with indicators, pull-up cleats, raw water washdown, stainless steel steering wheel with Sea Star hydraulic steering, plus an anchor locker. Also included are four stainless steel trolling rod holders with integrated drains plus molded in gunwale rod storage.
Notable optional equipment includes your choice of an aluminum or stainless steel-supported bimini top or perhaps choose the deluxe T-top complete with radio box, spreader lights and rocket launchers and to which you can also add T-top gull wings. Key West also offers an optional hardtop for the 239 FS. Various Sunbrella canvas covering options may also be selected. A set of four pull-up fender holders are available as are additional pull-up cleats. You may also choose to add a tilt steering wheel for added convenience and from a choice of seven hull colours.
For added family and cruising enjoyment, choose the AM/FM stereo with MP3 port and four speakers or even go one further with the upgraded premium stereo with amplifier and speaker upgrade. A fresh water shower station is also available. You may also want the pair of unique removable backrests to allow forward-facing lounging in the bow area.
Great for cruising or fishing enjoyment, a Convenience Center at the leaning post provides a sink with fresh water, cutting board, utensil drawers, cup holders, plus a slide-out cooler to which a flip-flop cover may be added. If your boating includes a lot of anchoring, choose the optional anchor windlass. More specific to fishermen would be the outrigger bases with or without outriggers, the power pole anchor system and a trolling motor harness with plug.
The 239 FS incorporates Key West’s latest hull technology which includes an expanded engine pod to provide increased cockpit space as well as a stepped hull bottom “to improve ride with an increased angle of entry in the forward part of the hull, transitioning into a lesser angle in the rear for improved low speed planing ability and better stability at rest.”
The 239 FS is indeed well equipped to accommodate both your cruising and fishing enjoyment.
