Sixty years and counting. Yes, sixty years since Richard Fisher had foam injected into his boat’s hull and had a diver saw through the boat with Richard calmly aboard while “LIFE magazine documented the triumph and the Unsinkable Legend™ was born.” In these ensuing sixty years, Boston Whaler has become arguably one of the most iconic and recognizable and respected brands in the pleasure boat industry.

Today, Boston Whaler offers thirty-five models in eight series of open tenders, side consoles, dual consoles, center consoles, walkarounds with cabins, plus pilothouse models from eleven to forty-two feet. All models come standard equipped with Mercury® FourStroke or FourStroke Verado® outboard engines.

The Montauk® series of four center console models from fifteen to twenty-one feet really exemplify the classic Boston Whaler “look”. The 170 Montauk®, subject of this review, is not a brand new model for 2018 per-se, but has added several new features of renewal for this year, some standard, some optional.

The generous nineteen inches of interior cockpit freeboard is assisted by almost full length welded stainless steel grab rails offering a steadying handhold to any seated position. A bow rail is also standard. Optional high or low profile stainless steel solid or split bow and/or aft side rails are available to further augment passenger cruising safety.

Standard seating is provided by a double-wide helm seat complete with a reversible and locking backrest plus storage beneath the seat cushion. Additional optional seating is available from a cushioned aft bench seat, or individual port and starboard aft seats with plug-in backrests, and/or a 72-quart cooler with seat cushion and backrest which mounts on the forward side of the center console, and/or a forward sun lounge with bow cushion, or a forward floor-mounted pedestal fishing seat which is not compatible with the sun lounge if so chosen.

Boarding is via molded-in port and starboard boarding steps located midship to allow the center console to act as a steadying assist to entry, plus the standard equipment port side fibreglass stern swim platform complete with a grab rail and telescoping stainless steel boarding ladder. New for 2018 is the optional teak package which adds teak covering to both of these items.

Integrated transom storage is standard as is an overboard-draining bow locker, ideal in which to store an anchor while the new for 2018 standard forward fishbox located just aft of the bow locker could easily double as a beverage cooler with ice. Additional storage is found within the center console itself with a large port side gasketed door offering access to the battery, door-mounted storage or trash bin, plus some available floor space for other items. Optionally available as part of a fishing package are tackle drawers built into the outboard starboard side of the console.

The molded center console itself features an acrylic windscreen surrounded by a sturdy stainless steel grab rail, three drinkholders, the requisite stainless steel steering wheel with standard hydraulic steering, a custom analog engine instrumentation panel, partitioned storage at the top of the helm, plus a Mercury® binnacle engine control box. A generous selection of optional Raymarine electronics are available separately or as part of a package. A Fusion® AM/FM stereo with a pair of waterproof speakers is also available.

The 170 Montauk® comes standard in Boston Whaler’s classic all white gelcoat hull colour or you can choose from one of four soothing hull side only or full hull gelcoat colours. Standard power is a Mercury® 90 ELPT EFI FourStroke engine which factory tests report a top speed of 40 mph with an optimal cruising speed of 20 mph at 3500 RPM. Time to plane with this engine is reported to be 4.3 seconds. Better performance will be gained with the optionally available Mercury® 115 EXLPT EFI Black Command Thrust FourStroke engine. The fuel capacity for 2018 has been increased significantly from 13 to 25 gallons.

A swing tongue, galvanized trailer with disc brakes and a trailer jack is standard equipment or can be optionally cancelled or upgraded. Additional notable optional equipment includes a livewell which fits beneath the helm seat, pre-wiring for a trolling motor, a ski-tow arch, plus various canvas coverings in blue or black plus a sun top with boot.

In addition to an unusually extensive list of standard equipment for a boat of this size and type, the Boston Whaler 170 Montauk® can obviously be extensively optioned to suit almost every conceivable taste, use, and desire.
