Boat Review by: Richard Crowder
G3 Boats of Lebanon, Missouri, a Yamaha Boat Company, offers simply an outstanding selection of dozens of models of both riveted and all-welded aluminum boats from fifteen to twenty-two feet in five series; Sportsman™, Bay™, Angler V™, Gator Tough™ Deluxe Jons, and Gator Tough™ Jon boats.
The Angler V17 SF, which is a fishing boat with family-friendly features, is one of eleven Angler models from sixteen to twenty-one feet. Most Angler models, including this V17 SF, feature a riveted three-piece .080 gauge hull with G3 Boats’ exclusive GX2™ double-plating .080 gauge aluminum on the bow and hull bottom. With a full eight-foot beam on a seventeen foot, two inch length, the V17 SF offers lots of interior room for fishing or for family fun times and the forty inch bow depth will keep the interior dry in all but the roughest water conditions.
Catering to the dual purpose of fishing and family recreation, deck surface coverings are offered in your choice of carpet or vinyl. Also to this dual purpose end, a starboard side stern swim platform complete with 3-step telescoping boarding ladder is standard as is the addition of two standard fold-down jump seats to the aft casting platform.
With a pair of standard high back, contoured, well padded and upholstered portable fishing seats, the Angler V17 SF therefore provides comfortable standard seating for four. These two portable fishing seats can be positioned in any of the seven in-floor seat mounts; four in the cockpit, two within the aft casting platform and one within the bow casting platform.
Storage abounds on board and most of the compartments feature not only a molded lip designed to keep out water but also a positive seal compression latch. Almost the entire area within the raised bow casting platform is dedicated to storage. Within the port side of the bow platform are three compartments; two for storage and the third, a 20 (US) gallon aerated livewell.
Within the starboard side of the bow platform are two more storage compartments, one of which is huge. Centered longitudinally within the bow casting platform and accessed from below the center opening section of the high walk-through three-piece contoured windshield is a newly designed lockable rod storage compartment with four rod tubes plus an open storage area for rods with larger line guides.
The very front of the bow of course features the raised trolling motor mounting pad for one of the many available optional Minn Kota® trolling motors. Being a dual console model with the walk-through windshield, there is a lockable glove box within the passenger helm plus lockable storage boxes available beneath both driver and passenger helms.
The inner port side cockpit wall provides a second lockable rod storage compartment and a much smaller compartment along the starboard side is ideal for all manner of smaller items requiring easy access. Centered within the raised stern casting platform is a second but smaller fifteen (US) gallon aerated livewell. Battery storage is also found back here. A built-in fuel tank centered within the cockpit floor holds thirty-four (US) gallons.
The newly redesigned molded driver and passenger consoles feature “soft-touch” vinyl covering. The driver’s console features a sporty custom tilt wheel with standard hydraulic steering. Immediately ahead of the steering wheel are Faria® gauges; two large diameter ones for tachometer and speedometer plus three smaller ones for trim, fuel, and volts.
To the right is a very classy DC switch panel featuring stainless steel toggle switches with LED indicator lighting. Immediately above this panel is a large flat surface to mount your choice of several available optional Lowrance® sonar and/or GPS graphs. A painted urethane metallic two-tone Bear® powder coated Trail Guard® trailer with custom graphics and detachable tongue is supplied standard with the Angler V17 SF.
Recommended Yamaha outboard power from 90 to a maximum rated 150 horsepower is available. Yamaha test results with 115 horsepower reports maximum speed of almost 43 mph with the most efficient cruising speed of just over 21 mph at 3500 RPM and 0 to 30 mph taking 7.5 seconds. Your results may of course vary but these results might seem to suggest that 115 horsepower could be ideal for this boat. A Yamaha 9.9 hp kicker motor is optionally available as is a battery charger, a semi-circular, transom mount ski tow loop, plus many more accessories to enhance your pleasure on the water.
Designed for fishing and for family fun, the G3 Angler V17 SF is well suited for the mission.
