Boat Review by: Richard Crowder
New for 2018, the 355 LXF is the seventh model in Scout’s LXF series ranging from twenty-five to forty-two feet and soon to be joined by a new company flagship, the 530 LXF. This LXF series of Luxury Center Console Sportfishing boats is joined by three other series of Center Console, Dual Console, and Bay boats totaling twenty-one models in all from seventeen to the soon-to-be-introduced 53 footer.
The 355 LXF rides on Scout’s epoxy-infused Dual Stepped Hull Technology which, “Reduces the hull’s wetted surface, creating a faster, dryer and better performing boat requiring less horsepower and increased fuel savings.” Scout utilizes 100% hand-laid fibreglass with no structural wood whatsoever. In addition, all Scout boats are unsinkable.
The 355 LXF is rated for a maximum 1,050 outboard horsepower which can be achieved with available triple Mercury or Yamaha 350 hp motors. Recommended horsepower is 900. Scout reports that with triple Yamaha F300 motors, the boat achieved a remarkable top speed of almost 63 mph at 5900 RPM with an optimum cruise speed of 36 mph at 3500 RPM. Time to plane was under six seconds.
Luxurious accommodations with an extraordinary level of standard equipment both above and below decks best describe the 355 LXF. The entire cockpit is surrounded with padded upholstered bolster cushions which also act as backrests for the port and starboard side bow seating area and the center fold-down forward-facing two-person stern seat.
On the front of the helm center console is a double-wide Sun Deck Lounge with contoured cushions, flip-up armrests, and a storage compartment beneath. There is also storage beneath the bow cushions plus port and starboard dedicated molded-in 10 gallon cooler compartments. There is also bow in-floor storage and the flush bow anchor locker comes standard with a Lewmar windlass with foot and helm controls.
The helm console is huge, functional, and accommodating with its powder coated patented T-Top hardtop with Glass Enclosure® on three sides and three adjustable captain’s helm chairs each with flip-up forward bolsters and with side flip-up armrests plus all three with heated seats with individual controls. A cooler box, storage drawers, and trash receptacle are beneath these seats. Behind the captain’s chairs but still under the protection of the hardtop is a two-person, aft-facing bench seat which converts to a raised preparation table. This aft-facing seat is designed to accommodate the optional Seakeeper 3DC gyro stabilizer.
A stainless steel Edson tilting steering wheel with Optimus Electric Hydraulic steering is centered in the dash with its Garmin 7612 display, trim tab controls, plus a Fusion Bluetooth stereo system with amplifier and eight speakers. From the helm and with the standard remote key fob, the owner can control features throughout the 355 LXF with the help of C-Zone digital switching technology. The Garmin touch screen also allows viewing from the standard integrated forward-facing fish-eye bow camera mounted to permit anchoring observation, docking, etc.
A starboard side console storage cabinet is provided while on the port side is the cabin entry door. Inside the cabin is a forward convertible double berth, removable teak table, port and starboard hull side windows with opening portlites, refrigerator, a 19-inch television, port storage cabinet, starboard porcelain vessel sink with vanity and mirror, plus a marine electric head. Other notable standard equipment includes pull-up cleats, shore power, 50 amp battery charger, plus fore and aft hardtop spreader lights.
The cockpit of the 355 LXF will please any fisherman with its port and starboard in-floor 47 gallon fish boxes, 60 gallon transom fish box cum storage compartment, 55 gallon aerated transom baitwell, plus both raw and fresh water washdown capability. There are two under-gunnel rod storage compartments plus ten stainless steel gunnel rod holders. A starboard side transom door leads to the dual extended swim platforms and Armstrong dive swim ladder. A port side in-hull boarding door is great when docked or for watersports use.
Optional choices include four hull side colours, three accent stripe colour choices, three optional cushion package colour choices, plus white or custom-colour engine paint. Also choose joystick engine control, a bow thruster, autopilot, upgraded Mercury or Yamaha steering and instrumentation, windshield wiper, 12-volt air conditioning, electric fibreglass cockpit sunshade, stereo upgrades, bow electric convertible teak table with sunlounge cushions, underwater lights, hardtop solar panels to extend battery life, outrigger options, plus various canvas coverings and weather protections.
Scout calls its LXF series, “The Ultimate Scouts” and it’s easy to see from the 355 LXF why this is so.
