Boat Review by: Richard Crowder
The 2072 Pro Sportsman is one big, deep boat and with its modified V hull design and all-welded construction, is built for big water and rough weather. It is the largest of six models in the Sportsman series which forms part of five series in Smoker Craft’s North American Angler category. There are literally dozens of models in total from Smoker Craft for 2018 and fourteen more series in two additional categories, Fishing and Utility.
“When It’s Time To Bring Your ‘A’ Game” is Smoker Craft’s byline for its North American Angler category and its Sportsman series is heralded as “a favorite of guides all round to meet the demands of the most grueling conditions.” And being an open boat at twenty and a half feet on a full eight foot, one inch beam with well over two feet of interior depth and over thirty-three inches of overall depth and a rated capacity of six persons, this 2072 Pro Sportsman is definitely designed to go anywhere, anytime to accomplish the task at hand.
Being an open boat, it is intended for tiller handle steering control with a rated maximum horsepower of up to a powerful and very fast 200 of the motor brand of your choice from Evinrude, Honda, Mercury, Suzuki, or Yamaha. To this end, two fishing seats are provided standard; one in the extreme starboard stern from which to operate the tiller handle and a second seat mid-ship on the port side. Seat pedestals are optionally available as is a storage box with hatch beneath the stern seat. Fish-On high back swivel seats are also optionally available.
If as the owner/driver of the 2072 Pro Sportsman you would like some protection from the weather that an open, tiller handle controlled boat cannot provide, or you simply want to control the boat with a steering wheel and the normal throttle/gear control lever, then you can choose the optional side console with switch panel and gauges including fuel, tachometer, and volt or perhaps choose the tall center console, both of which come with a tinted windscreen.
For an open boat, there is much more in the way of dedicated storage compartments than normally would be found. The very bow of the 2072 Pro Sportsman features a gunnel-level trolling motor pad with storage within. A trolling motor plug is optionally available from Smoker Craft as is a trolling motor panel. Aft of this pad is a raised bow casting platform, again, an unusual find in an open boat such as this. Within this platform are two large storage compartments, each featuring diamond-plated flush and lockable lid. Rubber gaskets around these lids are provided to keep stored contents dry. An optional FreshCatch aerated livewell is available to replace one of these bow storage compartments.
Immediately aft of this bow casting platform and within the main floor of the boat is another very large storage compartment, again with a diamond-plated flush and lockable lid with rubber gasket. Aft of this and centred in the bottom of the boat is a built-in 38 (US) gallon fuel tank. Very commendably, and again somewhat unusual, all Sportsman models, including the smallest 1660 model have built-in fuel tanks. Dedicated rod storage is provided along the inside walls of the boat below the gunnel. A tackle tray is provided as standard equipment.
The marine treated ¾-inch plywood floor of the 2072 Pro Sportsman, complete with a Lifetime Warranty, is fully covered with easy clean and sturdy vinyl. Sideboards running full length on both sides of the cockpit feature bottom cut-outs designed as toe-holds to help keep you aboard when landing the big ones.
Foam flotation is injected rather than poured with the objective of filling all air pockets within the hull beneath the floor to provide greater strength and buoyancy and to reduce noise. The hull receives a zinc chromate primer and then is fully painted with three urethane base coats, baked, and then three more coats of accent paint and then baked again. Three colour combinations are available; Pewter with Black stripe, Pewter with White stripe, or all Beige. Other notable standard equipment includes a bilge pump and navigation lights.
Factory available optional equipment includes two downrigger brackets, a bow-mount anchor release, a stainless steel grab bar, transom riser, water/fuel separating filter, and a ram-mount Humminbird sonar unit. A Fishing Package provides three Fish-On rod holders.
The 2072 Pro Sportsman is a versatile, rugged, and go anywhere boat suitable for every conceivable sportsman’s purpose.
