Boat Review by: Richard Crowder
Striper boats are focused on fishing. For 2018, Striper offers a total of nine models of Center Console, Dual Console, and Walkarounds from twenty to twenty-nine feet. The 290 is the largest of four Walkaround models and is designed and intended for big water fishing.
All nine models ride on Striper’s deep-vee, 20-degree deadrise V Trac™ wood-free hull with full width composite transom. The Fibercore one-piece composite stringer system is sprayed in every available open space with high-buoyancy, closed-cell foam for safety and to absorb vibration and to reduce noise.
At almost thirty feet on a ten and a half foot beam and with available twin outboard power up to a maximum of 600 horsepower, the 290 Walkaround is a substantial boat with high freeboard and a bow flare to tackle the big water for which it is intended. The cockpit is self-draining, the fibreglass hardtop is standard, and an opening centre section in the windshield lets in fresh air as do the opening side windows.
Through the locking cockpit cabin door and a few steps down leads to the accommodating cabin with forward dinette table convertible to a V-berth with filler cushions. A mid-cabin beneath the raised helm accommodates sleeping for another two persons. To port is a galley with cabinets, sink, pressure hot and cold water, alcohol/electric stove, refrigerator, plus microwave oven.
To starboard is a separate fibreglass head compartment with porcelain toilet plus shower and molded sink and vanity. A total of four hullside opening portlites plus a foredeck overhead opening hatch supply fresh air to the cabin. Storage is provided under the V-berth cushions plus on port and starboard full-length shelves plus in cabinets provided.
The cockpit is dedicated to fishing with its standard port side transom aerated livewell/baitwell with high speed pickup plus port and starboard in-floor large insulated fishboxes. A starboard side transom walk-thru swing door leads to the dual swim platforms with standard grey Marine Mat. A stainless steel 3-step dive/boarding ladder is stored on the aft side of the transom and attaches to a bracket just below the starboard side swim platform.
Recessed rod racks are provided under the cockpit gunwales, four flush mounted stainless steel rod holders are provided as are eight rocket launchers mounted on the aft edge of the hardtop. A dry storage locker, fish lockers with drains, a bait station, plus six tackle drawers are also provided as are both fresh water and raw water washdowns. Pull-up cleats are standard as is a bow pulpit and anchor locker plus anchor roller and windlass, hardtop mounted spotlight and aft-facing LED spreader light.
Cockpit seating is provided by a helm seat, a two person L-shaped passenger seat, cushions for the top of the fibreglass compartments aft of both of the helm and passenger seats, plus a centre stern bench seat. The glare-reducing grey gelcoated fibreglass helm and dash comes standard with a stainless steel steering wheel with knob, large speedometer, tachometers for each engine, plus trim, fuel, oil, and temperature gauges, all with chrome bezels and offset to the left of the dash leaving lots of space for flush-mounted electronics ahead of the wheel.
Hydraulic tilt steering is standard as are five 12-volt accessory plugs, courtesy lights, two manual/automatic bilge pumps, three battery switches, high water alarm, plus shore power and battery charger. Also standard is a Rockford Fosgate stereo with Bluetooth capability, MP3/iPod port adapters, a USB port and six speakers. Standard hull colour is white or your optional choice of Black, Blue, Light Blue, or Grey hull side colours.
Lots of available factory options allow you to equip your 290 Walkaround to your liking. An Alaska Package gives you an aft drop curtain plus windshield defroster plus port and starboard windshield wipers. Four Raymarine electronics packages give you increasingly comprehensive navionics from a 7-inch plotter/sonar plus VHF through nine-inch and up to a twelve-inch screen with all of the above plus radar and more.
You can select a Shoreland’r aluminum trailer, a full canvas package, SeaStar steering, upgraded engine diagnostics, stereo upgrades, outriggers, underwater lights, cabin interior upgrades including fabrics and bunk beds and snap-in Marine Mat, another baitwell, a cockpit table, air conditioning, and a 5kW Westerbeke generator.
As Striper says, “When you step onboard a Striper boat, you’ll experience fishing as it was meant to be.”
