The 160 Super Sport, Boston Whaler’s all-new keel-up redesign of this Unsinkable Legend™, won an NMMA (National Marine Manufacturer’s Association) Innovation Award for 2019 at this year’ Miami International Boat Show.

It is now the largest of four models in the Super Sport series which is one of seven Boston Whaler series of tenders, center console, dual console, walk-arounds, and offshore boats comprising dozens of models up to its flagship 420 Outrage.

This redesign of the 160 Super Sport is all-encompassing, modern looking and quite striking in appearance and features while maintaining Boston Whaler’s remarkable sixty year heritage of recognizable watercraft.

The 160 Super Sport is sixteen feet, two inches center line length or seventeen feet, five inches length overall (LOA) to the back of the twin stern boarding steps and motor, and rides on a six foot, ten inch beam. Standard power is a 75 horsepower Mercury® 75 ELPT EFI FourStroke outboard or you may want to upgrade to the 90 horsepower Mercury®.

This is indeed a big boat with interior freeboard over two feet deep. The starboard side control console with full-width fibreglass bench seat facing it are together positioned almost exactly midship for optimum fore and aft balance and running attitude. A stainless steel steering wheel is standard and a sporty-looking upgrade is optionally available.

The dash on the console ahead of the wheel is minimal and houses the standard tachometer and 12-volt receptacle. A flat horizontal surface between the console and the hull side offers a fore and aft cupholder and room to pedestal mount a GPS navigation screen or fishfinder. The front surface of the console opens for access to a lockable storage compartment within the console.

The helm bench seat with two centred cupholders accommodates two adults comfortably and may be optionally upgraded with a full-width seat cushion, one or two backrests, bucket sport seats, or individual hinged backrests. A large portable cooler neatly fills the space on the floor between the console and the port inner hull side and may be optionally fitted with a cushion.

Beneath the helm bench seat on the port side are the two portable 6.5 gallon fuel tanks with hold-down straps. A large inner raised bow platform contains an overboard-drained storage compartment suitable for an anchor and this platform may be fitted with an optional bow cushion. Aft of the console is a handy storage shelf.

Stainless steel grab rails, one almost full length on the port side and one each fore and aft of the console on the starboard side provide passenger safety and reassurance. The two aft boarding steps can double as swim platforms and the step on the port side has a standard stainless steel telescoping boarding ladder mounted on top. The other most notable standard equipment is a single axle galvanized trailer with swing tongue and tongue jack.

White is the standard hull colour but you may optionally choose from four hullside colours or the same four full hull colours. Or instead, you may want to choose from four “Rear Accent” colours, a new offering from Boston Whaler.

The optional “dash appliqué” will spruce up your dash while synthetic teak appliqué on the stern boarding steps will look great back there. Functional and practical options include your choice of a full or split bow rail, console windshield, and a black sun-top (bimini). You may also want to upgrade to a single 19-gallon fuel tank which still fits under the bench seat.

If you choose the optional 90 horsepower Mercury®, then you may also choose a powder coated ski tow arch. A pair of rail-mounted fishing rod holders is also available. One most notable option for those with a smart phone is the Vessel View Mobile app which will give you engine readouts in real time, performance stats, maintenance history and planning, plus engine fault codes.

Boston Whaler performance results with the standard 75 HP motor and normal loading are quite remarkable showing a time to plane of only 3.6 seconds and an idle to 30 mph of 8.0 seconds. Optimum cruising speed producing the most economical fuel consumption is reported to be just over twenty miles per hour at 3250 RPM. Top speed was found to be just under forty miles per hour at 5500 RPM. If you needed more than this, then the optional 90 horsepower motor would obviously produce even quicker results.

The 160 Super Sport may be all brand new and look brand new and may indeed be innovative, but it still holds true to the heritage and values to which Boston Whaler has been respected for and dedicated to for over sixty years.
