Boat Review by: Richard Crowder
Glastron’s two models in its Surf & Fish series, the 205 at twenty-two feet LOA and this 225 at over twenty-four feet LOA, both offer excellent flexibility for the enjoyment of almost every aspect of day boating; cruising, entertaining, swimming, waterskiing, wakeboarding, wake surfing, and yes, fishing too.
What mainly differentiates this boat from Glastron’s identically sized GTD 225 Deck Boat is the Volvo Forward Facing Sterndrive in this Surf & Fish model thus allowing safety in wake surfing due to the propeller being beneath the hull as opposed to behind it as is the case with a standard sterndrive. This GTDW 225 Surf & Fish offers a 240 horsepower Volvo V6 FWD DRIVE as standard power with upgrades to 280 and 300 horsepower being available.
Aside from the driver and passenger consoles, the interior of the GTDW 225 is almost all seating and lounging. The driver and passenger consoles come standard with windscreens and may be upgraded with a full five-piece, center opening, walk-thru windshield. J-shaped bench seating extends from the passenger console aft along the port side, across the transom, and forward on the starboard side to just behind the driver’s fully adjustable bucket seat with flip-up forward bolster.
The backrest of the passenger console which allows aft-facing lounging is removable to become a backrest for forward-facing lounging when inserted within the port side bench seat half way back. Storage is found within this entire bench seat. In the U-shaped bow area, rounded side bolsters provide full stretch-out forward-facing lounging on both sides with storage beneath the seat cushions. A bow step allows access to the foredeck with its handy slightly off-center anchor locker with standard concealed three-step telescoping bow boarding ladder.
A unique feature with this and with some other Glastron models is the ease of port side entry/exit to and from the boat at a dock. A notched out section within the gunwale and hull side makes stepping over easier and a removable cushion on the portside bench seat along with the hinged seat base and lack of a storage compartment below, aids stepping into or out of the boat.
A sporty tilt steering wheel faces a likewise sporty dash panel featuring Glastron hooded custom multi-function gauges with a GPS speedometer, tachometer, fuel, volt, and trim gauges. A USB charge port is provided. Larger than normal articulated ”surf” trim tabs are standard as is a Kicker® Bluetooth® compatible AM/FM stereo with MP3 port and four speakers. An in-floor storage compartment beside the helm is ideal not only for watersports accessories but is also equipped with four tubes to double as a fishing rod storage locker.
Across the transom is a full-beam sunpad with flip-up starboard section providing not only a walk-thru section from the integrated swim platform to the cockpit but also providing a lounging backrest. Within this sunpad is another flip-up section to become a backrest for aft-facing seating on this sunpad. A concealed telescoping boarding ladder is provided on the swim platform and a second lower level extended swim platform provides even closer access to the water. Storage is provided within the sunpad area.
Two choices of sporty hullside colour combinations are offered, each with Surf & Fish graphics. Likewise are two choices of interior colour combinations. Other notable standard equipment includes combination cupholders/rod holders, a trash container, built-in cooler within the bench seat, a ski two eye, and a Glastron custom-matched tandem axle trailer.
Four optional upgrade packages are available. A Convenience Package provides a depth sounder with water temperature readout and an hour meter. A Premium Sound Package upgrades the stereo with a subwoofer, transom remote and speaker lighting. The XL Package includes the Convenience Package and adds pull-up cleats, stainless steel trim upgrades, a bow scuff plate, and cockpit marine mat in two colour choices. Finally, the Fishing Package provides a bow casting deck, trolling motor mounting plate and pre-rig, a baitwell and fishing seats.
Notable single optional upgrades include Zero Off speed control, a fold-down wakeboard tower with or without board racks and a bimini top, cockpit table with three possible mounting locations, carry-on cooler with dedicated storage, transom shower, and a bow pop-up privacy curtain with porta-potti.
You may also choose swim platform and/or cockpit marine mat in two colour choices, bow filler cushions, docking lights, underwater lights, anchor roller and/or windlass, upgraded steering wheel, fishfinder, stereo upgrade, 24-volt trolling motor, Sunbrella® bimini top, bow and cockpit covers, plus various trailer upgrades.
Glastron’s GTDW 225 Surf & Fish sets a high water mark in flexibility of day boating enjoyment.
