Boat Review by: Richard Crowder
Canada’s Legend Boats has been known for its large selection of aluminum fishing and pontoon boats. This year it offers twenty-three models of tiller, side console, and dual console fishing boats in five series plus another three series of over a dozen pontoon boat models.
But hold on, as Legend says, “This year we’ve gone back to our fibreglass roots” with the introduction of two models of fibreglass deck boats; the Vibe D19 and D20. These two models are virtually identical in interior and seating layout while the extra one-foot, four-inches in length of the D20 is well used primarily in an extended foredeck and a bit on the aft deck.
Both of these new models come in an eye-catching vibrant lime green hull with strong black accenting on the hull sides. They both ride on a modified dihedral V-hull design which provides, in Legend’s words, “a deeper Vee down the centerline with two outer sponsons with reversed chines. These work together to eliminate side-to-side rocking and tendency to tip.” The commendably deep thirty inches of inner cockpit depth provides both safety and comfort for all aboard.
Being a side console design, the interior provides wide open surrounding seating from bow to stern with the exception of the port side transom walk-thru to the port swim platform section which is standard equipped not only with a concealed stainless steel telescoping boarding ladder but also covered with a grey mat. The starboard integrated swim platform section also has the mat covering.
The facing bow section lounges, the starboard side of which provides both forward and aft-facing lounging, and with full surrounding low profile stainless steel safety grab rails, are separated by a step-up to the large bow platform. This platform features floor-mounted bases for the two standard removable fishing seats plus an aerated in-floor livewell between the two seat bases, plus a concealed four-step stainless steel telescoping bow boarding ladder. A floor-mounted removable molded circular table with four molded-in drinkholders is provided in the bow area.
The port side bow lounge extends aft along the port side right to opposite the helm seat. The curved aft backrest section of this lounge offers forward-facing stretch out lounging for the passenger seated opposite the driver. In the middle of this extended port side lounge, a most useful lowered gunnel section within the hullside provides easier step-over for entering the boat from a dock on that side.
Storage is provided beneath all of the lounge seat cushions and a portable cooler has dedicated storage within the port side lounge opposite the driver. Even more seating is provided on a stern bench seat. A central in-floor storage compartment beside the helm console is ideal for watersports accessories such as waterskis, wakeboards, etc.
A fender storage locker is provided on the starboard transom section and a pair of molded-in curved transom sections at the front of the motor well provide extremely handy vertical storage for a pair of fenders complete with polished stainless steel retainers. This is excellent use of space and well thought out. A stern fishing rod storage box is also provided.
The molded starboard side driver’s console with removable tinted windscreen and large storage area within the console is fitted with a sporty looking tilt steering wheel with hydraulic assist. Three chrome-ringed analog gauges, the larger centre gauge being speedometer flanked with a pair of slightly smaller gauges, to the left a tachometer and to the right a multi-gauge for fuel and volts are housed in a pleasing modern-looking custom black molded upper dash module.
Accessible to both the driver and passengers on the lower left of the dash is the control unit for the Kicker KMC 10 Bluetooth compatible AM/FM All-In-One Media Center stereo complete with four speakers and auxiliary port. The driver is provided with an adjustable bucket-style helm seat with forward flip-up bolster. On the upper forward section of the console ahead of the windscreen is a handy standard molded-in fresh water sink with faucet.
Additional notable standard equipment with the Vibe D20 includes a ski tow pylon, pre-wiring for a 12/24 volt bow-mounted trolling motor, stainless steel drinkholders, bow cover, bimini top with boot, and a Legend Glide-On trailer. Standard power is provided by a Mercury 90 ELPT 4-Stroke outboard. You may upgrade from this to a 115, 150, 175, or maximum 200 horsepower Mercury outboard.
Adding the D19 and D20 fibreglass deck boats to Legend’s traditional aluminum offerings is a leap forward and these two exciting and well thought out boats should prove to be an excellent decision.
