Boat Review by: Rick Layzell
By definition the word ‘vogue’ has multiple uses with similar meaning; As a noun – the prevailing fashion or style at a particular time As an adjective – popular; fashionable As a verb; dance to music in such a way as to imitate the characteristic poses struck by a model on a catwalk.
If Princecraft’s objective in designing this new model for 2019 was to encapsulate the emotion of style, fashion and the poses of a model on a catwalk, then the Vogue 27 SX simply nailed it. This boat lies beautifully at the dock with styling cues that warm the soul from the bow and carry gracefully to the stern of her near 28’ length.
The Vogue 27 SX could be your first pontoon just as easily as your last pontoon. She exudes fashion through unbelievably plush interior vinyls and the traditional fence on most pontoon exteriors are replaced with beautifully styled 2’6” deep body panels that feature two tone paint (metallic blue or titanium with white trim) adorned with raised logos and emblems. She is in a word – sexy.
Our test boat was dressed in the Sport Edition package which gave us a two tone cloud white interior and super plush premium textured vinyls as well as LED lighting in the interior floor, bimini, speakers, fixed cup holders and the pontoon logs. We were also treated to a premium sound package with a powered sub woofer, select grey vinyl flooring, a stainless steel watersports tow bar, a black painted wakeboard tower with built in bimini and a head with a holding tank and pump out system. Add to that list the new Mercury 300 (also dressed in white) with active trim and this sexy, stylish pontoon screamed fun.
As we eased her away from the dock she felt smaller than her 27’ 11” length, looking around the cockpit at all that beautiful upholstery it’s not hard to tell why, this was as nice of an interior in a boat as you’d find in today’s high end homes. The interior layout is stylish with monstrous forward loungers and a uniquely positioned pair of plush passenger seats adjacent the fiberglass raised helm. One of the forward loungers secretly held the change room as well as the head – very nicely designed.
The helm is luxurious with one of the most comfortable and easy to use captains seats I’ve ever had the pleasure of using. Princecraft’s ultra-plush, heavy weight upholstery used everywhere in this model certainly played into that moment. The molded dash panel accented perfectly with black inserts, lighted switches and the smoked windscreen, raised and padded footrest felt perfect for my 6’1” frame. Integrated into the raised helm was a galley with sink, faucet with electric pump and its own portable water tank – awesome for entertaining. I also appreciated the sport tilt steering and loved the Sea Star hydraulic system.
Our testing was completed on a 23 degree C day with two of us on board, ½ tank of fuel (she holds 185 litres) and that big sexy 300 Mercury at the ready. We piloted away from the dock and once clear of the no wake zone I popped her onto step in a very quick 3.76 seconds – given her overall dry weight of 3,698 lbs (1,677 kgs) this is an excellent time to plane. Cruising on your pontoon is a key component to happiness with your pontoon – the Vogue 27 SX didn’t disappoint with a cruising speed of 21.1 MPH @ 3,510 RPM and a slightly quicker 25.2 MPH @ 4,060. You’ll find lots of room for your own happiness with running and cruising speeds for you and your crew on this package. With the air temps beginning to cool we wicked our way to a very respectable 46.4 MPH @ 5,940 RPM.
It was during the top speed trials and video shooting that I began to appreciate the ‘Performance Configuration’ that the Vogue carried. This package gave us the under deck spray shield, lifting strakes and a centre log that holds the fuel tank. Mercury’s Active Trim took care of engine trim details allowing me to simply drive the boat – so whether we were running video footage, carving the boat or chasing top speed results this feature takes any doubts about trim away. Active Trim would be a must on my shopping list.
All in all Princecraft has done an outstanding job on the Vogue 27 SX. She meets the definition of Vogue regardless of which definition meets your own needs. This package would be a beautiful addition to any dock at any cottage, cabin or marina.
