Boat Review by: Richard Crowder
Boston Whaler’s all new 360 Outrage fits neatly between the 330 and 380 in its seven model Outrage center console series ranging from 23-42 feet. But, the 360 is more than just a new model. It moves the goalposts of space, accommodation, flexibility, and advanced technology. In fact, there is so much incorporated into this new model that we are only going to be able to hit the highlights in this review.
Flexibility starts with power as one of Brunswick Corporation’s most established brands. Boston Whaler offers an optimum selection of Mercury outboards starting with triple 300 V8 DTS Mercury FourStrokes. Next up are triple 400 L6 DTS Mercury Verado FourStrokes, then triple 450R V8 DTS Mercury FourStrokes, and finally a pair of the incredible new 600 V12 DTS Mercury FourStrokes. All come with Digital Throttle and Shift, all with Joystick Piloting with electronic steering, Skyhook/autopilot keypad, and all are available in black or white.
Available electronics move some goalposts. The helm visor with custom stitched cover shadows a custom black acrylic dash replete with a standard equipment flush-mount 16” Simrad NSO evo 3S screen providing GPS, chart plotter, fishfinder, digital switching/system monitoring, integrated Mercury SmartCraft control, Active Imaging 3-in-1 sonar with Chirp, with SideScan and DownScan.
A second Simrad 16” screen is optionally available, as are single or dual 19” screens. Chirp 3D sonar is available as is open array radar, satellite weather, Automatic Identification System (AIS) transceiver, FLIR thermal night vision with pan, tilt, and zoom, and with or without image stabilization, and a Simrad cockpit rear view camera.
A flush-mount Simrad RS40 VHF radio is included with AIS receive-only and utilizes a wireless handset for control of the VHF. Across the top of the dash panel is a horizontal row of DC switches with illuminated text that automatically lights up at dusk. Mercury DTS binnacle controls are provided with integrated Auto Drive Trim and push button start/stop control as the ignition switches with ignition keys are in the lockable main DC panel cabinet. Vessel View Mobile is optionally available.
Also flush-mounted on the dash and integrated into the Simrad navigation package is the remote unit for the JL Audio MM105-HR stereo AM/FM/HD radio with dual USB and dual AUX inputs, iPod, iPhone, Android compatible via integrated Bluetooth 5.0, SiriusXM™ ready, and with custom tuned multi-zone system 1200 Watt amplifier and ten JL speakers plus a sub-woofer. A Premium upgraded stereo option substantially increases the amplifier and speaker sizes.
Also on the dash is a locking glove box with dual USB charging receptacles and a stereo USB Aux input. On top of the dash, port and starboard 12-volt heaters with blowers act as windshield defoggers. Three high-back helm chairs with flip-up forward bolsters and outboard armrests face the dash console with its cast stainless steel tilting steering wheel with knob. A full width molded console footrest has a fold-down standing platform with maintenance-free, anti-fatigue surface.
On the aft side of the helm seats are a pair of aft-facing high-back chairs with teak armrests and a pair of integrated drinkholders and USB charging ports. Storage with LED lighting is found beneath the seats. The high backrests of these seats fold down as one unit to form a prep station with easy-stow-and-go work surface, teak counter and four cupholders. Beneath the helm seat on the starboard side are three storage drawers which may be optionally replaced with a refrigerator/freezer. The three drawers on the port side under the helm seat may be optionally replaced with either another refrigerator/freezer or a Seakeeper 3DC gyroscopic stabilizer. These stabilizers are amazing in how they work.
A foldaway stern bench seat completes the standard cockpit seating and an optional fiberglass or solid teak table with dedicated storage is available as a handy addition to serve both the stern and the aft-facing seats. A standard lit and pressurized 25-gallon livewell with clear acrylic lid is on the transom, handy for fish or for keeping beverages cool. On the cockpit port side is a molded fiberglass dive door with removable stainless steel boarding ladder. A starboard side acrylic transom door leads to a swim platform with recessed telescoping boarding ladder. There are both port and starboard in-floor cockpit fishboxes. There is both a dive door shower and a transom shower.
An outrigger-ready hardtop with aluminum frame in powder coated black or white is standard and comes with a lockable electronics box, bow and aft cockpit LED flood lighting, 3-colour courtesy chart lighting, aft-mounted rod holders, and a built-in aft-centre ladder for hardtop access through an acrylic hatch. The full-height curved windshield and side glass features a centre-top power actuating vent and a windshield wiper with wash system and with intermittent control.
Space and flexibility are the touch words to describe the bow area. On the front face of the helm console is a pair of full stretch out lounge seats with fold-down armrests, drinkholders, dual USB charging ports, and storage beneath with LED lighting. Port and starboard seats with fold-up lounge backrests, storage beneath, more USB charging ports and drinkholders, plus a stereo remote, storage pockets, and a switch to pump out the in-floor bow fishbox. A fiberglass or teak hi/lo bow table with cushion and dedicated storage is optionally available.
A separate removable filler cushion with hard base provides both the bow seat to complete the U-shaped bow seating, and when removed, better access both for fishing and for access to the anchor locker. Anchor windlass, rode, and polished thru-stem anchor and roller is standard as is freshwater anchor washdown. A pantograph hinged locking door on the starboard console side leads one teak step down to the overnight cabin of the 360 Outrage. It features a fold-out double bow berth, solid teak flooring, a vanity cabinet with sink and storage, rod storage, shower head and curtain, a teak fold-down seat over the Vacu-Flush® toilet, opening portlight, and indirect and direct lighting.
There is courtesy and compartment lighting, safety rails, and rod holders everywhere you look on the 360 Outrage. There are hidden storage shelves and compartments, cockpit toe rails, and full interior surrounding coaming bolsters adding to that feeling of safety provided by the twenty-eight inches of interior freeboard. Shore power is standard as are two battery chargers, fresh and raw water cockpit washdown taps, and trim tabs with both indicators and Dynamic Running Surface auto control.
Major available options include battery packages, an automatic push button engine flush system, pop-out fender holders, choice of outrigger packages, starboard side cockpit fold-out bench seat, a pair of fold-down trolling seats, a power retractable stern sunshade, portable bow sunshade, and a spotlight. You may also want a theft deterrent system with First Mate and remote connectivity. You will for sure want some canvas weather protection in the form of seat protectors, mooring cover, and/or a full enclosure in Makrolon® with black or white Stamoid®.
A deluxe transom prep station is available which eliminates the stern bench seat while providing a counter top, cutting board, sink, faucet, electric grill, and storage. A Convenience Package provides hot water to all appropriate sinks and faucets, air conditioning for the cabin and at the helm plus additional amenities in the cabin.
Do you like advanced technology? Then choose the FATHOM option which deletes the regular batteries and replaces them with three lithium ion batteries, a 3000-watt inverter/charger and a battery management system. Or you can choose a 7.5 kW generator or two choices of inverter packages, but all of these are mutually exclusive. A yacht tender package is available as are commissioning and factory delivery options.
Perhaps the most obvious and exciting option is the upper station with two seats and a dash console mounted on the roof of the hardtop. It includes a fiberglass pod with the same tilt steering wheel with electronic steering, joystick, and DTS controls as at the lower helm, and a Simrad NSS12 evo3S 12” display with GPS, chart plotter, and fishfinder as well as a Simrad HS40 VHF wireless handset. A bimini top in black or white Stamoid® is included. But – the big reason why I have left this most exciting addition last is because this upper station option is not compatible with Canadian, EU, or Australian certification. This means, as of this time of writing, that this option is not available in these three jurisdictions! Please check with your dealer.
But you can choose from 11 choices of painted hull colours, 4 choices of gelcoat colours for the underside of the hardtop, 6 choices of hullside graphics colours, white or black for the hardtop frame, and tan or gray exterior upholstery and helm gelcoat accenting colour. An aluminum trailer is also available. Choosing your options carefully will result in a unique centre console that will provide you with immeasurable pleasure and one that is at the leading edge of technology and design. And given its extraordinarily deep vee hull with 23-degrees of deadrise at the transom, it will handle the big stuff with poise and perfection.
