Boat Review by: Richard Crowder
Cruisers Yachts now offers three GLS models in 34, 38, and 42 feet -- baby sisters to its highly successful Cantius series of seven models from 42 to 60 feet. The 38 GLS is available with both sterndrive and outboard power, and with outboard power gaining in popularity that is the model we will concentrate on here.
Regardless of your choice of power, your 38 GLS will be essentially the same as there is little difference in the standard and available optional equipment between models. Except for the obvious trade-offs like the larger swim platform with sterndrive power and the cavernous below-cockpit storage compartment with outboard power you will find few other differences.
The cockpit of the 38 GLS is designed specifically for conversation, entertainment, relaxation, and lounging. It even imports a notable cockpit feature from its larger Cantius sisters –a pair of swivelling, lockable bar stools. But unlike a Cantius, these bar stools are located opposite the helm seat, thus offering a great view of everything going on within the cockpit and in the water behind.
This compact L-shaped cockpit galley plus wetbar provides a countertop, sink with faucet, stainless steel-fronted refrigerator, storage with bottle holders, and five drinkholders. The galley may be optionally equipped with an electric grill and a television. Aft of the galley is an L-shaped lounge seat that extends across the transom to the walk-thru with transom gate leading to the swim platform.
Aft of the helm seat on the starboard side, a second L-shaped lounge seat faces the port side, thus promoting conversation and entertainment. Both lounges double as dinettes with tables. Storage is found within both lounge seats. Once on the swim platform, relax on the aft-facing lounge which shares its backrest with the cockpit stern portion of this lounge. This backrest swivels to accommodate starboard-facing seating facing the beach door.
The beach door is amazing. The aft portion of the starboard hullside of the 38 GLS lowers electrically to become an additional swim platform. Its surface is at the same level as the fixed swim platform, which itself is at the same level as the cockpit and bow area. There is no stepping up or down throughout the entire upper level of this yacht, from stern to bow. A telescoping swim ladder resides beneath the starboard extended section of the swim platform.
A double-wide helm seat with flip-up forward bolster faces the large upper and lower gloss black surfaces of the very effective and practically laid out dash which is bordered in grey for a very classy and professional look. Standard electronics includes a pair of flush mounted 12” Simrad GO series screens providing engine and some vessel monitoring as well as navigation functions. Radar is optionally available.
Also on the dash is the head control unit for the standard Rockford Fosgate audio system. A tilting, multi-spoked custom steering wheel with power assist completes the presentation. Aft of the standard Joystick Piloting and binnacle engine controls on a shelf to the right of the driver is an inductive wireless cellphone charging pad. The standard hardtop, available in black or white gelcoat, is large enough to provide quite adequate weather protection. This hardtop features a manually opening sunroof.
The opening portside section of the three-piece windshield provides access to the large U-shaped bow lounge, complete with convertible teak table and filler cushion to create a huge sunlounge. Sitting or lounging is made more comfortable by the three forward facing dedicated headrests and a fold-down armrest with drinkholders. Up front is an anchor locker with standard thru-stem anchor and windlass. Cockpit and bow upholstery colours are grey and white to complement the white fiberglass inner liner.
To the left of the helm, a sliding door with screen leads to the salon below with a second galley immediately to port. This galley includes a microwave convection oven as well as a refrigerator. A television is optionally available. Opposite the galley on the starboard side is a head compartment with sink, mirror, vanity, considerable storage, electric head, and shower.
Forward is a U-shaped convertible dinette with a lowering table to convert to a guest berth. An aft stateroom features a custom sized berth with bi-level shelf storage and reading lights. A 24” TV is optionally available. Air conditioning is standard in this salon area. You have a choice of Neutral or Gray accenting colours while wood trim is ebony oak. Flooring is Amtico.
Outboard power for your 38 GLS OB comes from your choice of Mercury® triple 300, 350, or 400 Verados, or 450R’s -- all of them in standard Mercury® black or optional white, and all with standard Joystick Piloting for Outboards. Factory performance testing shows top speed with triple 300’s to be 52.5 mph at 6000 RPM with the most efficient cruising speed to be almost 30 mph at 4000 RPM. With the most powerful triple 450R’s, top speed was 65.1 mph at 6400 RPM with the most efficient cruising speed to be 32.6 mph at 3500 RPM.
Additional notable standard equipment includes helm, bow, and cockpit seat covers in white or black, a pair of 30-Amp battery chargers, AGM batteries, dual 30-Amp dockside power, trim tabs, starboard windshield wiper, woven mat flooring in the cockpit, cockpit shower, and a built-in under-seat cooler.
Notable optional features include four choices of hullside colours, bottom paint, cockpit cover, full enclosure canvas in white or black, portable foredeck sunshade, cockpit electric SureShade, auto stabilizing system, 6kW Kohler generator, central vac, centrifuge toilet, polished anchor, anchor washdown, cockpit washdown, ice maker beneath the helm seat, gray SeaDek flooring in cockpit, underwater lights, exterior pillow package, and an interior towel package.
Equipped as you would like it, your Cruisers Yachts 38 GLS Outboard will be very fast and sleek and eye-turning as well as a comfortable and pleasurable cruiser ready to deliver a lifetime of memorable onboard experiences.
