Hailing from Helsinki, Finland the Saxdor 200 comes to Canada behind some impressive hype. Bear with me as I reveal just how this Saxdor 200 bowrider, side console, runabout, overnighter – yes, overnighter – that looks like a centre console, is, in the words of Saxdor, a personal watercraft!
The Saxdor 200 sport boat, when first introduced in 2020, was a category winner of The Best of Boats award with an expert jury from 15 countries claiming it “combines convenience and ease of use.”
Even more, the Saxdor 200 was a 2021 category winner of the prestigious European Powerboat of the Year award. This award was decided by “a jury comprising of test riders and editors-in-chief of nine European boating magazines assessing workmanship, safety, driving behavior, design, and distribution of space and price-to-performance ratio.”
The Saxdor 200, at 19’6” LOA on a relatively narrow 7’6” beam, is the smallest of six Saxdor models, the largest of which is the 400 GTC cruiser, and rides on a double stepped hull design with a commendably deep 22.5 degree deadrise.
That deep-vee hull and the sleek pointed shape contribute to the Saxdor 200’s smooth ride. The increasingly common vertical stem design helps split the water away from the hull early as well as adding interior room. The interior itself is full of unique surprises.
Starting with the bow, which comprises almost half the length of the boat and which is raised a short step up from the sole of the cockpit, Saxdor gives you one large flat non-skid fiberglass area. If you are a fisherman this provides a huge casting platform. But if you also add the optional colour-coordinated and removable bow cushions you’ll also have a huge forward sunpad lounge.
But there is one trick that I have never seen before -- unlock a pair of latches close to the console and the entire “floor” of the foredeck is hinged and opens up on gas shocks to reveal a storage area below. This area can then be optionally fitted with a zippered and screened and windowed tent structure to enclose the entire area. The three bow cushions fit this area perfectly to provide a comfy relaxation spot or the base for an overnighting bed. Smart. Thoughtful. Unique. Nifty. I love it. How’s that for new and different?
The double-wide driver’s console is fitted with a windshield that – are you ready for it? – slides up and down to provide greater or less wind and weather protection as you see fit. Again, new and different. The face of the console is large enough for two screens. A Mercury VesselView Mobile® screen is standard to provide all the necessary engine data. You may optionally add one or two Simrad GO9 XSE screens to give you a chartplotter along with VesselView being incorporated in one of them.
A pair of stainless cupholders serve the driver and passenger while a sport steering wheel with standard hydraulic steering and a Mercury binnacle control provides the driver with his or her driving necessities. A handy and large colour coordinated multi-compartmented pouch with zippers and Velcro closures is mounted below the steering wheel to accommodate any manner of smartphones, wallets, sunglasses, or other toiletries. Different, unique and practical.
There are a couple available seating options, but the twin high-back bucket seats with fixed side bolstering and flip-up forward bolsters are the optimum choice. You may also choose from four colours of quality material in “Smoked Orange” (as seen in the attached pictures), “Coffee with Cream,” “Cognac Shoot,” or “Limited Version R.”
The flat cockpit floor of the Saxdor 200 is standard and comes covered with a comfortable spongy bottom material. This same material also covers the molded-in driver’s footrest on the front of the console. The molded double-wide seat base is a large storage area and accessible when each or both of the driver’s and passenger’s bucket seats are hinged up and forward.
There are options available for the aft passenger seating too, but the one I prefer is the two-person bench seat with a backrest, which flips to allow forward or rear-facing seating. This double-wide and double-long seat also provides a large storage area within its base. An in-floor storage area ahead of the motor provides access to batteries, mechanicals, and electricals. Deep vertical storage compartments are provided within both the aft port and starboard sections of the hull sides immediately ahead of the transom – of which there is none!
That’s right. More new and different. There is no transom. You can just walk straight aft from the cockpit onto either of the short platforms on either side of the Mercury outboard and straight into the water. No scrambling over or through a transom. How’s that for closeness to the water to better enjoy your favourite watersports? Saxdor says it’s what makes it like a personal watercraft.
Or you may opt for a pair of clear transom gates to prevent Fido from accidentally (or purposefully) jumping in the drink. And you need not worry about swamping from a following sea. Any little amount of water coming aboard will quickly drain back out or be removed by a pair of bilge pumps. You would have to work at it to have any great amount of water flow on board.
You may choose a 100, 115, 150, or 175 horsepower Mercury outboard which will provide a top speed in the range from just under 40 to just over 50 mph. Additional notable options include trim tabs, Mercury Active Trim, a sturdy ski pylon, basic or Premium Fusion entertainment system, anti-slip soft spongy flooring for the foredeck and/or side steps, different size coolers to fit different storage compartments, bimini top, side windows, Targa arch with T-top or soft top, sunshade roof over foredeck, and various boat and mooring covers. Along with upholstery choices, there are various choices of hullside colours and graphics.
The Saxdor 200 claims to be new and different and it sure lives up to that claim. Option it up to your heart’s content and enjoy a unique boat with loads of practicality and fun for all.
