Commisioned in 1977 in Port Sydney B.C. and built by highly respected Canoe Cove Manufacturing, whose fibreglass-hulled boats were prized by rescue, police, coast guard and other commercial industries because of their seaworthiness and rugged quality, True North III is a fine example of the breed. Designed to cut through the waves in the Pacific Northwest, few Canoe Coves are to be found in the East, with most living in BC, Washington, Oregon and even Cailfornia.
Sold on by the original owner, who had sailed her to Alaska and California, in the early 80s - the original build sheet is still with her - she was actually trucked across country to Lake Simcoe by the new owner and kept there, and then in Toronto, making a trip down the East Coast to Florida. The third owner came along around 2000 or so, also sailed down to Florida, kept her there for 2 or 3 seasons, and then back to Kingston.
She was bought in August 2015 by the present owner, with 3,350 miles on the twin Perkins 160 HP Turbo-charged Diesel engines with Walter Vee Drives. The engines are mounted aft, under the cockpit, giving added stability as well as a low slung profile for excellent seaworthiness. At 1300/1350 rpm and 7.5 knots, she can cruise all day at an extremely economical 12 litres per hour (including generator use), and with a tank of over 1500 litres, has a range of over 900 nautical miles.
The lower helm station controls are good for bad weather, while the upper helm, in it’s large and airy bridge, provides excellent vision and the added benefit of the Garmin GHP Reactor Autopilot, part of the Garmin Electronic network - lower and upper MFDs, 24” GMR 24xHDS Radar, with 2 VHFs, AIS, transducer, etc. - which was added to the boat during the extensive Refit planned and executed in 2016 (see separate document)
The three cabin layout is extremely accomodating: the interior, completely decked out in teak, boasts a large aft stateroom with head and shower stall, a spacious salon with galley to one side, and a V-berth forward, with its own head. Storage is everywhere, all surrounded by beautiful carpentry. Access to the starboard engine through a cupboard door is useful, while access to the port engine, if needed, is through a hatch under the double bed mattress.
The large “Cargo Hold” below the salon - with two methods of access - contains the huge 160 gallon water tank (fitted by the previous owner) as well as storage and access to water pumps, wa- ter filters, charge controller, etc.
The cockpit at the rear has excellent access to the engine room and generator - a new (2016) Westerbeke 5.5. BCD generator - again a part of the refit which also included a reinforced radar arch, new refrigerator, stove top, battery charger and monitor, AC and DC main panels, an inverter, reversing camera, Racor Twin fuel filters, replaced and rebuilt starter motors, alternators, new Dinghy Caddy, wiring, wiring wiring, etc., etc, etc. (in all, over $75,000.00 in equipment and materials alone).
An interior stair leads up to the spacious sundeck, with lots of room for lounging, and another three steps up to the bridge, which features a new (2023) Sunbrella enclosure by Ahoy Canvas of Penetanguishene, on top of which is a new solar array of 450 Watts.
The current owners have put 900 hours on this beautiful boat, travelling the Great Lakes,
the canals, Lake Champlain, and the St Lawrence Seaway as far as Tadoussac and the Saguenay, but it is time to stay a little closer to home, and we no longer need a long distance trawler.
**NOTE-Dinghy and Engine Not Included**
