Lund 186 tyee GL callout

The 186 Tyee GL is one of only four models of fibreglass boats offered by Lund for 2012. By contrast, Lund offers well over sixty models of aluminum fishing boats from twelve to twenty-two feet. Indeed, Lund is probably one of the most recognized builders of aluminum boats and many are surprised to know that Lund even offers fibreglass boats.

As a bit of background, "When G. Howard Lund built his first aluminum duck boat in 1948, he had no intention of creating a legacy." "His simple goal was to build a stalwart boat that could stand up to the rocky lakes and rivers of the north." The Lund Boat Company of New York Mills, Minnesota and Lund Boats Canada of Steinbach, Manitoba have come a long, long way since 1948 to provide almost every possible variation of dedicated fishing boat imaginable.

And in the past number of years, this includes fibreglass. "Designed to provide a higher, drier ride, Lund's fibreglass boats also deliver serious performance and handling to get you on the fish in even the trickiest corners of the water." Boats dedicated to and designed and engineered for fishing is Lund's mission, and this 186 Tyee GL is no exception as will be seen in this review, however, if other watersports activities are also part of your plans, this boat will perhaps more than fit the bill.

Storage is everywhere you look on the 186. From the helm seats forward is in-floor lockable storage for eleven fishing rods (or other long objects) up to eight-feet long. Under-gunwale storage is found on both sides of the cockpit. More storage is found under both aft convertible folding seats (convertible to form part of the aft casting platform) plus behind both of these seats which also act as half swim platforms beside the motor. The starboard portion of this half platform/storage conceals a folding, telescopic three-step swim ladder with a handy grab handle next to it.

The bow area is comprised almost entirely of handy finished storage compartments, the most forward one of which is not only the largest, but also doubles as an insulated cooler. On the starboard bow side is a 21" long, 8.5-gallon ProLong livewell with integrated baitwell. A second, even larger over 30" long, 16-gallon ProLong livewell with integrated baitwell is found immediately ahead of the motor between the two aft seats. Of course, livewells/baitwells also double as great coolers for soft drinks or juice, etc. More storage is also found within the driver and passenger consoles.

The flexible seating arrangements of the 186 Tyee GL will satisfy the most demanding of fishing or family or watersports enthusiasts. In addition to the two aft convertible folding seats, a total of three ProRide bucket-type seats are provided, two of which have fixed pedestals; the third being the driver`s seat with a unilock pedestal with slider. There are a total of eight, yes eight, recessed seat bases into which these three seats may be mounted. Additional pedestal seats are of course optionally available should you need more, and for real comfort, go for the "AirRide" version. For the bow area, add the optional custom side/back bolsters and bottom cushions for even more comfort and lounging availability.

Both the driver-side and passenger consoles are Lund's upscale ProControl GL Auto Style complete with footrests on both sides, 12-VDC power outlets, Sony AM/FM/CD stereo with two speakers and a remote, and full outboard instrumentation and padded, tilt steering on the driver's side. Notable options include part or full canvas, snap-in carpet, a ski pylon, an electronics package, plus several fishing-related upgrades. A custom trailer is also available. A total of six hull colour combinations are available to suit your taste and/or to make your 186 Tyee GL stand out.

You may have always considered Lund as strictly a hard-core fishing machine – and it is precisely that – but you will likely be more than surprised at just how versatile and accommodating it is as an all-round bowrider runabout great for family outings and watersports – especially this 186 Tyee GL.
