Boat Review by: Richard Crowder
Polar Kraft of Syracuse, Indiana, is part of the Nautic Global Group of Elkhart, Indiana, builders of Rinker (runabouts and cruisers), Hurricane (deck boats), and Godfrey (makers of Sanpan, Aqua Patio, and Sweetwater pontoon boats), plus the recently revived Parti Kraft pontoon boats.
For 2014, Polar Kraft offers over seventy models of V-hull and modified V-hull aluminum fishing, bass, sportsmen, and Jon boats in ten series from fifteen to twenty-one feet. The Kodiak Sport V 170 FS, at just over seventeen feet on a very wide, full eight foot beam is one of three Kodiak Sport FS models.
These three Kodiak Sport models with the “FS” designation for Fish and Ski, all have walk-thru full windshields, dual consoles, and standard touches of comfort and convenience. As such, they are intended to bridge the needs of a hardcore fishing machine and a family oriented multi-purpose fun boat. And all three are equipped to perform both functions extremely well.
Construction wise, the V 170 FS utilizes Polar Kraft’s V-Force TCD (Torque Control Design) three-piece aluminum hull with double riveted seams, reverse chines, extruded aluminum lifting strakes and spray rails, Versi Snap gunnels, and reinforced with eight longitudinal stringers, double layered centre keel, urethane closed cell foam flotation, aluminum bow and stern castings, and finished with high gloss urethane paint. Choose from eight available exterior colour combinations. Two-tone colour schemes are optionally available as are custom graphics.
The interior of the V 170 FS is particularly suited for both fishing and family activities with four pedestal seats, two of which may be removed and mounted in the bow and stern platform seat bases provided. Additional seats may be optionally added or exchanged. Marine grade 18-ounce carpet is standard throughout the interior and may be optionally exchanged for vinyl flooring in the cockpit area.
Vinyl covered coaming pads in both the cockpit and bow areas add a touch of comfort to the interior and a bow cushion is standard as are grab handles and cupholders. Up front is a large carpeted foredeck section with a standard Minn Kota 55 Edge 52”, 12-volt trolling motor and with anchor storage below.
Still in the bow area, ahead of the seat pedestal base is a 9.3 gallon (35.2 litre) baitwell plus on the port and starboard sides are in-deck storage compartments, the hinged aluminum lids of which are foam-backed. On both sides of the cockpit are more longitudinal storage compartments, the port side one suited for locked rod storage. Within the stern casting deck is an aerated 25 gallon (94.6 litre) livewell with a 750 gallon per hour pump and with both automatic and manual timer.
Both driver and passenger molded consoles are attractive and modern yet functional and pleasant. The passenger side includes a locking glove box plus open knick-knack storage tray while the driver’s console behind the standard tilt steering wheel includes a full complement of outboard gauges. A 12-volt receptacle is standard as is a Lowrance X4 Pro Fish Finder. Other standard equipment includes a stern boarding platform with fold-down step. A black painted single axle, swing tongue trailer also comes standard.
The V 170 FS can be rigged with your choice of brand of outboard power and is recommended to be between 90 and 150 horsepower. Hydraulic steering is optionally available and a great addition not only for added safety but also for ease of handling. There is a rather complete list of optional equipment to select from and your choices will no doubt depend on whether your boat will be used primarily for fishing or for family fun.
For Canadian weather for all occasions you will probably want at least a mooring / trailer cover and/or a tonneau cover or go for the complete bimini top with side and stern curtains. Specifically for fishing, choose one of the upgraded Minn Kota trolling motors, upgraded Lowrance fish finders, and perhaps an upgraded bow panel with battery gauge and switch.
More for family enjoyment, you will probably want on board entertainment from an AM/FM digital stereo with CD player. The ski tow bar will probably also be on your list. You may also want the upgraded sporty looking steering wheel. You can also upgrade the standard trailer with a colour-matched or a galvanized trailer.
With the V 170 FS, Polar Kraft has certainly brought together the needs of both the fisherman and the demands for good family times and watersports fun into one package.
