Boat Review by: Richard Crowder
The new 307 SSX is next to the largest in Chaparral’s “Top of the Line” seven model SSX series of well-equipped bowriders. In all, Chaparral offers a total of thirty-five models in six series of outboard, jet, and sterndrive powered bowriders, sport decks, cuddy cabins, ski & fish, express cruisers, and watersports boats ranging from eighteen to thirty-three and a half feet.
As in all SSX models, the 307 SSX is loaded with an impressive list of standard equipment. Riding on a wide 9-foot, 6-inch beam Extended V-Plane hull with Kevlar® reinforced hull laminate, the 307 SSX also features a commendably deep-vee 22-degree deadrise.
The wider beam of the 307 SSX adds enormous utilization and enjoyment of interior space. Up front past the standard bow door is full wrap-around comfortable lounge seating with upholstered backrests, finished storage beneath the hinged side seats plus an insulated built-in cooler beneath the bow seat cushion.
In the cockpit, the wider beam allows for twin, forward-facing, double-wide both helm and passenger seating. Both of these seats have built-in headrests plus flip-up forward bolsters. Behind the passenger seat is a U-shaped lounge area with a starboard bench seat opposite, both served by a standard cockpit table with dedicated storage. This table also has a bow mount. All seating offers finished storage below.
Through the starboard side transom safety gate and walk-through to the very large and low-to-the-water integrated swim platform is a very comfortable two or even cozy four-person rear-facing transom seat which converts to a huge sunlounge. Of course a concealed 4-step stainless steel boarding ladder is provided as is a stainless steel transom shower. Pull-up cleats are also standard on this upscale SSX.
Within the passenger helm is a finished fibreglass head compartment outfitted with a solid surface vanity with stainless steel sink with pull-out shower wand faucet. A china bowl VacuFlush toilet with holding tank and monitor is standard along with an opening, screened portlight, power vent, mirror, storage cabinet, and wood flooring.
The attractive and functional dash of the 307 SSX is custom molded with aluminum dash panels and a hand-stitched upholstered visor fronted with a custom leather and stainless steel tilt wheel. Fog resistant multi-function gauges provide both digital and analog readouts to match your choice of either single or twin-engine MerCruiser or Volvo sterndrive power. Regardless of your choice of power, the centre of the dash features a standard Garmin 741XS 7-inch colour touchscreen GPS plotter display with built-in sonar. An instrument dimmer switch is standard as is a starboard wiper.
Within this driver’s helm is a huge storage compartment. Two in-floor storage compartments are also provided; one large one with a light and with added drawer storage between the helm seats for watersports accessories and another one in the bow area. A carry-on 36-quart cooler with dedicated storage is provided.
You have five choices of Chaparral’s “Wide Band” hull side colours from with to choose. A black or white aluminum arch is standard equipment as is an electric engine hatch, a Premium sound system with Bluetooth, media inputs, Sirius Satellite tuner, amplifier, six speakers, two remote control displays, plus a third remote control. Also standard is an automatic fire extinguishing system and trim tabs.
With the long list of standard equipment on the 307 SSX, there isn’t a particularly large option list. But a couple of these options are certain to draw lots of attention. The first of these is the electric folding option for the arch and the second is the fibreglass hardtop option. To these, add various colour coordinated weather-protective canvas coverings. Another perhaps must-have option is the starboard side cockpit wetbar with countertop, sink, pullout sprayer, and trash receptacle. You can also select a gas grill and a refrigerator. Go for the bow filler cushion, snap-in cockpit carpet, and perhaps the Plasdeck swim platform mat, Wetsounds System stereo upgrade, battery charger, underwater lights, anchor and electric windlass.
For power, single Mercury or Volvo 380 to 430 horsepower with Bravo III or Duo-Prop and available DTS (Digital Throttle and Shift) or EVC (Electronic Vessel Control) respectively are your quite adequate choices. If you would be happier with twins, you can choose from twin 250 to twin 380 horsepower of either brand and with some of these, Mercury Axius or Volvo Joystick docking control is available.
Chaparral’s 307 SSX is lots of boat with lots of room, lots of flexibility, and loaded with features.
