Boat Review by: Richard Crowder
The telltale tumblehome of the hull sides as they curve seductively and almost imperceptibly inward toward the transom plus the generous application of solid teak trim throughout unmistakably pronounce that this Launch 36 is a Chris-Craft, “America’s Boatbuilder Since 1874” as the company refers to itself.
The Launch 36 is the largest of the five model open bow Launch series starting at twenty-two feet and forms part of Chris-Craft’s seventeen model offering in seven series for 2017 ranging from twenty-one to forty two feet. But while from an initial outward glance the Launch 36 may appear to be a very large bowrider day boat, upon closer inspection it reveals all of the attributes and features of a comfortable and luxurious mid-cabin express cruiser.
The Launch 36 also adheres to Chris-Craft’s philosophy of including an unusually comprehensive complement of standard equipment of those features you would most desire in a cruiser of this size and function while the optionally available equipment list is thus significantly shorter than you would normally find.
The most significant and perhaps unexpected decision you will face at the outset is in your choice of power. Standard power is from twin Mercury V8 8.2L Fresh Water Cooled (FWC), 380 horsepower sterndrives with BRAVO 3 outdrives with Digital Throttle and Shift (DTS) controls. You can increase this to twin 430 horsepower units or choose similar horsepower Volvo sterndrives with Duo-Prop outdrives and Electronic Vessel Control (EVC).
But Chris-Craft does not stop here. How about twin Volvo D6 diesel sterndrives in either 370 or 430 horsepower, and wait for it, why not consider twin Mercury or Yamaha 350 horsepower outboards or go even further with triple Mercury or Yamaha 300 horsepower outboards. Appropriate joystick control is available with any of the above selections.
The next decision will be much easier. Leave the hull sides in Chris-Craft’s Ivory Cream gelcoat colour or choose non-metallic black painted sides or one of nine metallic painted hull side colours. Then choose a boot stripe colour and select from the five standard vinyl combination colour choices plus interior fabric colour choices.
The integral swim platform with concealed 3-step boarding ladder is overlaid with teak as are all horizontal deck surfaces with your choice of black or blonde caulk between the strips. One step up from the transom and through the centre transom gate leads to the beautifully appointed cockpit with its U-shaped settee and electric actuated teak table. Centred ahead of this is a large console housing a full galley complete with ice maker, refrigerator, microwave, sink, storage, two burner glass top electric stove plus a grill.
Abutting this console on its forward face and one step up are three high-back helm chairs with headrests, armrests, and flip-up bolsters facing a helm console with a tilt mahogany wheel, teak footrests, “Chris-Craft” digital gauge package, depth finder, plus a remote for the Premium Fusion AM/FM, Bluetooth enabled stereo with MP3/USB inputs, amplifier, subwoofer and JL Audio Sound System speakers.
Two steps up on either side of this centred helm console leads to the forward facing bow lounge seating which converts to a protected full size sunlounger utilizing the rear-facing curved bow lounge and concealed filler cushion. A centred screened sliding cabin door in the helm leads down to the cabin with forward pedestal island berth plus a double and single mid-cabin berth plus two cedar-lined hanging lockers.
To starboard is a stand-up head compartment with a Tecma porcelain toilet, stainless steel sink, plus storage cabinets. To port is a separate stand-up dedicated shower compartment with a seat plus storage. This cabin also features a combination flatscreen TV/DVD plus air conditioning/heating. Even a 6Kw generator is standard equipment. You can choose from walnut and whitewashed oak interior wood treatment or the optional zebra wood. A bimini top plus console and helm seat covers are standard as are many other trim and decor features including of course a bow flagstaff with embroidered Chris-Craft pennant.
The short list of available options includes a hardtop with pullout aft sun-shade or with a glass sunroof and electric aft sun-shade, bow thruster, LED docking lights, underwater lighting, electric anchor windlass, Sirius satellite radio, plus single or dual screen Garmin 7612xsv electronics package.
As Chris-Craft says, “For 142 years, we’ve been building boats with a passion for timeless design, exquisite details and authentic craftsmanship.” The Launch 36 exemplifies this tradition.
