Boat Review by: Richard Crowder

Of the nine series of pontoon boats offered by Crest comprising dozens of floorplan layouts in lengths from twenty to twenty-seven feet, this new Continental series of models in twenty-five and twenty-seven feet are not only the largest offered by Crest but this is the only series available with a full-height, full beam, wrap-around, five section walk-thru windshield as standard equipment.

The Continental 270 NX is available in two floorplan layouts: the “CS” subject of this review with a stern couch plus a starboard side entertainment centre aft of the helm chair, and the “L” configuration which provides an L-shaped aft port side lounge plus a small bench seat on the starboard side aft of the helm seat.

Aside from this seating variance aft of the helm seat, all other features forward of this area are identical on both floorplans. Of most interesting note here is that both floorplans are both available with either single or twin outboard power. This review will concentrate on the “CS” single engine model.

An additional noteworthy feature of the Continental 270 NX models is that three pontoon tubes are standard equipment – a pair of 25-inch diameter on the outside and a 26-inch diameter tube in the centre. Performance enhancements to the tubes which are normally optional add-ons on most pontoon boats are also standard equipment here including aluminum underskin and skirting, solid full keels, plus lifting strakes.

The walk-thru windshield plus the upholstered interior side panels plus the two helm chairs makes this Continental 270 feel more like big full-beam sport boat cum deck boat than a pontoon boat. One of the benefits of being a pontoon boat though is the bow side entry gate plus centre bow entry gate for easy access.

Two chaise lounges covered with “Soft Touch Comfort Plus Expanded Back Vinyl” upholstery on Rotocast seat bases fill the bow area aside from the two entry gates. Seat bottom cushions on dual articulating hinges provide access to the storage within. A forward facing starboard side three person stern bench seat provides not only storage within but also transom access storage behind it. This bench seat has a custom fibreglass base complete with courtesy lighting. Beside this bench seat along the starboard side aft of the helm chair is an entertainment center with sink, water tank, plus some storage.

The driver and passenger at the two consoles are treated to 29-inch King Helm recliner chairs with flip-up bolsters and armrests. Both custom molded two-tone fibreglass consoles have eyebrows plus woodgrain accenting. The woodgrain instrument panel ahead of the sport tilt wheel features a standard centre-mounted Garmin GPS chartplotter flanked by the normal complement of chrome-bezeled Faria engine monitoring gauges. An hour meter is optional.

Also standard is a Premium Audio System with Infinity 350 receiver, USB adaptor, wireless remote, six Infinity 10-inch LED speakers, JBL amplifier, plus Infinity subwoofer. Lighted cupholders are standard as are two moveable cupholders, and a Sumatra gloss cockpit table with molded-in cupholders. Other notable standard equipment includes a bimini top, bow and stern cockpit covers, LED docking lights, aluminum ski tow bar, powder coated rails, four-step stainless steel telescoping boarding ladder, stainless steel pop-up cleats, hide-away change room with curtain, and a custom Crest logo’d cooler bag.

Single or twin outboard power is available from your choice of BRP, Honda, Mercury, Suzuki, or Yamaha up to 400 horsepower. Sea Star Solutions hydraulic steering with electric assist is standard and may be optionally upgraded.

Other notable optional equipment includes additional tube performance enhancement, a custom aluminum billet instrument panel, in-floor storage in the centre tube, snap-in carpet, bow entry gate filler seat, colour-matched ottoman with built-in cooler, a cooled cupholder for the captain, deluxe ski tow bar, dual batteries with or without a charger, LED under-deck lighting, plus a stereo upgrade.

As Crest says about its Continental series, “you get the ride of a luxury sport cruiser, the space of a pontoon, and the confidence of knowing it’s everything a Crest has ever been.”
