Boat Review by: Richard Crowder
The HD 240 is the middle of three sizes of deck boat models from twenty-two to twenty-seven feet offered by Four Winns® of Cadillac, Michigan, itself part of Groupe Beneteau, one of the world’s largest pleasure boat builders.
All three sizes of HD deck boats are commendably available with either sterndrive or outboard (OB) power. Why is this commendable? There are many positive reasons why many manufacturers are offering the choice of outboard power on this size of boat today where only a very few years ago the only offering would be sterndrive power.
To Four Winns’ credit, the choice to power your HD 240 with an outboard or a sterndrive will be based strictly on your power preference since the outboard motor is mounted to the aft edge of the integrated swim platform and there are absolutely no other changes whatsoever to the layout or amenities on the boat. If the outboard-powered model (OB) is your choice, then you may further choose from the offerings of Evinrude®, Mercury®, or Yamaha® in 200 or 300 horsepower. Choose from MerCruiser® or Volvo Penta® in 300 or 350 horsepower if you prefer sterndrive power.
Once this most basic decision of choice and brand of power is made, you can option up a standard boat to your liking or you can choose an RS or SS option package and further upgrade from there. The RS and SS upgrade packages are differentiated mainly by their individual gelcoat and graphics schemes. Both packages include significant standard upgrades including docking lights, pull-up cleats, swim platform mat, stainless windshield header, cockpit carpet, colour-matched interior with shark skin texture vinyl, plus a Sunbrella® bimini top.
Almost all of the above package upgrades may be individually added to the standard HD 240. The large integrated low profile swim platform of the HD 240 features Four Winns’ signature concealed deep-reach angled swim ladder with wide step pads. Facing this platform is an aft-facing transom lounge seat.
A starboard side dedicated transom walk-thru brings you to the cockpit with its surrounding U-shaped seating configuration, all with hinged cushions, and all with storage beneath including dedicated storage for the standard portable cooler beneath the stern seat cushion. The captain and companion seats are adjustable Comfort Ride bucket seats with flip-up forward bolsters. You may optionally choose the reclining version of these bucket seats. All assist handles and cupholders within the cockpit are of stainless steel.
At the helm, the dash features top stitch-style detailing plus LED accent lighting, Four Winns® custom fog-resistant gauges, depth sounder with water and air temperature, plus a deluxe tilt steering wheel. You may optionally choose a premium upgrade tilting steering wheel and a flush-mounted in-dash Raymarine® A77 GPS. An AM/FM stereo with Bluetooth® connectivity and an iPod®/MP3 port and with four speakers is all standard. A premium upgrade is available as is a transom remote with display.
Within the companion helm is an enclosed head compartment cum convenient private change room complete with standard porta-potti and portlight window. A lockable glovebox is provided within this console. Between the two helm seats is an in-floor storage compartment with mat and is most suitable for watersports accessories such as waterskis and wakeboards, etc.
Bow seating in the HD 240 is full U-shaped surround with cushioned backrests and storage beneath the hinged seat cushions. More storage is found behind the backrest cushion on the starboard side within the helm. Beneath the bow seat cushion is a built-in insulated cooler. This particular cushion removes to allow step-up access to the bow platform complete with its anchor locker and concealed fold-out boarding ladder.
Notable available options for the HD 240 include Sunbrella® canvas coverings, LX and SLX convenience packages, fixed or powered wakeboard tower, transom & bow showers, trim tabs, underwater lighting, anchor windlass, bow filler cushion, Reed mat cockpit carpet, electric head, cockpit table, bow walk-thru doors, plus upgrades to the standard Four Winns® custom-matched trailer, among several other options.
Four Winns’ HD series of deck boats offers an incredible range of choices of size, power, and amenities to suit almost every day-boating lifestyle.
Note** Today’s four stroke outboard motors are extremely high-tech following the lead of the most sophisticated car engine manufacturers, are whisper quiet almost to silence, are lighter weight than a corresponding sterndrive package, don’t take up valuable cockpit storage or seating space, are highly fuel efficient, and usually require slightly less draft than a comparable model with a sterndrive. Also, winterizing an outboard motor is significantly easier and less expensive.
