Boat Review by: Richard Crowder
The R302 is Robalo’s new flagship of its nine model center console fleet ranging from sixteen feet to this new thirty footer. For 2017, Robalo offers a total of eighteen models from sixteen to thirty-one feet in four series of Center Consoles, Bay boats, Dual Consoles, and Walkarounds.
The R302 rides on Robalo’s 21-degree deadrise deep-V HydroLift Kevlar-reinforced hull design featuring composite coring including poured composite transom coring and with encapsulated reserve flotation. Premium white gel coat is standard with a black or blue boot stripe or you can optionally choose from six colours of solid hull, wide hullside band, or hull bottom only and add a Fish Hook graphic.
You can also optionally choose from four cockpit interior colour choices. Similarly, you will need to choose black or white for the powder coated support structure of the standard white fibreglass hardtop and you can then optionally choose from seven colours of gel coat for the underside of the hardtop. This hardtop comes complete with a choice of black or blue Sunbrella console cover, rod holders, electronic box, LED spreader lights, plus dual colour map lights. You may optionally add hardtop outriggers and a leaning post cover.
One unique feature of the hardtop support structure is its custom bonded front windshield glass with opening vent at the top. You can add bonded side glass panels as well. The front of this console opens with two-thirds of the console front facing two person bench seat attached to reveal the head compartment complete with opening portlight, electric head, plus a vanity with storage and a stainless steel sink with pull-out sprayer.
A well padded and upholstered two person helm seat (leaning post) with flip-up armrests and individual forward bolsters faces a tilting, stainless steel wheel with spinner knob on the console with its integrated footrests and glovebox with its 12-volt DC receptacle and USB port. Sea Star hydraulic steering is standard as are trim tabs with indicators and a Premium Sound System Including AM/FM/WB Bluetooth stereo with AUX & USB jacks and four speakers.
The hull is rated for 700 maximum horsepower and power options are your choice of twin 300 hp Evinrude or Mercury Verado or Yamaha Four Stroke. White painted engines are optional. Digital gauges from your choice of engine brand will be included or this information may be displayed on one of the optional electronics screens in single or dual twelve or sixteen inches from Garmin or Simrad with or without radar and/or autopilot.
A molded wetbar is integrated to the back of the helm seat (leaning post) and includes a 20-gallon livewell cum cooler, sink with pressure water, and a bait preparation centre. The bottom aft face of this wetbar contains a slide-out portable 70-quart cooler. Another 25-gallon livewell cum cooler with LED lighting is molded into the aft port side corner of the cockpit at the transom.
Across the transom to the starboard side entry gate to the integrated swim platform is a fold down two-person bench seat with a transom storage compartment behind it. Just ahead and within the cockpit floor on each side are 50-gallon fishboxes with overboard discharge pumps. Bolster cushions surround the entire bow and most of the cockpit. A recessed stainless steel safety grab rail surrounds the entire bow area from beside the console forward.
The molded U-shaped bow seating is unique in that molded-in curved backrests allow forward-facing lounging on the port and starboard cushioned bow seats. Within these molded backrests is a starboard side tilt-out trash container and on the port side, multi-shelf tackle storage boxes. Beneath each hinged bow seat bottom cushion is an insulated 40-gallon fishbox and beneath the centre bow cushion, a 55-quart molded-in cooler. The entire bow area converts into a bow casting deck utilizing the standard bow filler cushion.
There is an in-floor bow storage compartment and right up front, an anchor locker complete with electric windlass, anchor roller, anchor, and rode. Additional notable standard equipment includes a 20 AMP triple bank battery charger, blue cockpit LED courtesy lighting, cockpit table with dedicated storage, cockpit side storage for tackle boxes and gear, pull-up cleats, transom fresh water shower, raw water washdown with hose connector, three-step telescoping boarding ladder, plus several drinkholders and rod holders. Notable additional optional equipment includes blue LED underwater lighting, VHF radio, B175 1kw transducer, and Wetsounds stereo for the tower.
As Robalo says, “the R302 is primed to tackle any fishing adventure.”
