Boat Review by: Richard Crowder
The 262 Fisherman is one of fourteen center consoles offered by Wellcraft for 2017, part of a total of twenty models of Center Consoles, Dual Consoles, Bay Boats, and Walk Arounds from eighteen to thirty-five feet.
The model name, 262 Fisherman, says it all in a nutshell. This center console is designed and built and outfitted for the fisherman, first and foremost. The only available options are to add some of those amenities that would make it more into a “family-oriented” boat. The standard equipment list is well suited for the fishing enthusiast hungry for big water fishing.
The high freeboard, the significant bow flare, the wide nine-foot beam, its rating for up to five hundred maximum horsepower, and the deep-V twenty-one degree deadrise of the hull at the transom all contribute to its big water capabilities. It also has foam flotation built into its fibreglass stringer system plus a self-bailing cockpit.
Entry to the 262 Fisherman is gained the normal way via a starboard side transom door from the integrated walk-across swim platform. The port side of this platform features a flip down stainless steel four-step telescoping boarding ladder. The non-traditional entry to the cockpit for a boat of this size is via a port side entry door located within the hull side to facilitate easy entry from an alongside dock. All mooring cleats are pull-up stainless steel.
Centered on the transom ahead of four transom-mounted rod holders and a pair of drinkholders is a two person upholstered fold-down bench seat. Next to the starboard side transom entry gate is a 17-gallon livewell/baitwell. A matching 23-gallon livewell/baitwell is on the port side of the transom next to the bench seat just aft of the port side entry door. Both of these livewell/baitwells have bluecoat with timer and light, high speed pick-up plus a handy cold water fold-down faucet.
Beneath the gunnels of the surrounding padded cockpit bolsters are built-in dual rod holders on both sides of the cockpit. Beneath these, again on both sides of the cockpit beside the console are self-draining in-floor fish box storage compartments complete with gas-assist lids. Centered ahead of the console is another in-floor storage compartment complete with built-in rod holders.
The entire front face of the console is a door that hinges up to allow entry one step down into a change room cum head compartment with porta-potti, several sections of side-mounted storage pouch style netting plus available storage for all your boating safety equipment and fishing accessories. A portlight is provided inside.
The bow area of the 262 Fisherman is devoted to fishing too with its full-length recessed inner hullside safety grab rails, a pair of gunnel-mounted rod holders, a cooler with dedicated storage, plus the foredeck anchor locker with roller and storage. Forward console seating is also provided.
A two-person leaning post faces the helm console complete with its high curved windscreen and port side mounted tilting, stainless steel steering wheel with spinner knob. The face of the dash provides ample room for your choice of single or dual-screen electronics to be mounted along with the engine gauges. Trim tabs are standard as is a 12-volt power outlet.
Other notable standard equipment, and in this case, a big one, is the standard fibreglass T-top with rod holders and powder coated support structure. Other notables include a second portable cooler with dedicated storage beneath the leaning post, raw water washdown, cockpit courtesy lighting, plus built-in tackle storage boxes.
Aside from selecting from six hullside colour choices unless you prefer the standard white, there are only three package options from which to choose. The Bow Seating Package provides forward facing clip-in backrests plus seat cushions and backrest cushions for the port and starboard bow sides.
The Family Package gives you all of the above plus a bow table and bow filler cushion to create a sunpad. The Seaside Trim Package provides a leaning post upgrade with backrest and more rod holders, snap-in Sea Grass flooring, plus a mat package for the helm floor and rod storage compartment. You may power your 262 Fisherman with your choice of Mercury, Yamaha, or Evinrude with single 300 or 350 horsepower or twin 150 to 250 horsepower.
There is no doubt about the mission of Wellcraft’s 262 Fisherman and it is well equipped for the task at hand – and the fun and the excitement too.
