Boat Review by: Richard Crowder
The new 1950 Sportfish is one of four Sportfish models from nineteen to twenty-three feet and rides on Crestliner’s patent-pending “revolutionary new Active Performance (AP-X) Hull.” This hull features recessed pad design and dual tracking edges intended to “actively channel water to the prop for instant lift and enhanced driving responsiveness.”
These four Sportfish series models come with all-welded hulls and another four Super Hawk series models comprise the Fish & Sport category. In all, Crestliner offers five categories of aluminum fishing boats totalling twenty-seven series and dozens of models from ten to twenty-three feet, and another nine models of pontoon boats from sixteen to twenty-four feet.
Versatility is the catch phrase that best describes the Fish & Sport series, and the 1950 Sportfish at just under twenty feet LOA epitomises this versatility. It provides the standard features most desired for both family on-water pleasure and for fishing. A long list of available options lets you outfit your boat to your specific priorities.
Seating is paramount for both activities. Four well padded, contoured, and sculpted Pro fishing seats with pedestals occupy the four cockpit in-floor bases, and can also be transferred to the single bow or stern casting deck seat bases. All seats are swivel and the helm seat is equipped with a slider.
What Crestliner calls a “conversion bow” is equipped with padded backrests on the forward side of each console, inner gunnel backrests, plus an aft-facing backrest at the front of the bow. A removable casting deck floor panel then provides foot room and permits seating by utilizing all of these backrests and portable seat cushions – thus converting the fishing bow to a bowrider. An additional three-piece cushion and backrest set converts the stern platform to seating.
Storage is found almost everywhere. There are three in-floor compartments within the bow platform and another within the bow trolling motor platform. Under-gunnel compartments with doors fill each side of the cockpit. In addition, there is a portside stern storage cubby with netting and open storage shelves beneath each console.
The passenger console features a lockable glove box. A new cockpit in-floor lockable rod storage locker holds five rods up to eight feet, six inches. Within the bow platform is a 14-gallon aerated livewell and in the stern platform is a 14-gallon aerated livewell with timer and recirculation system.
To the right and angled toward the driver is a pair of large diameter multi-function gauges displaying tachometer, speedometer, fuel, and trim. To the left is the Boss® AM/FM stereo with Bluetooth® capability, USB charging port and two Jensen speakers. The passenger dash provides both a 12-volt and USB outlets.
Additional notable standard equipment includes 16-ounce marine grade carpet throughout, LED courtesy lights, vinyl-wrapped cockpit side panels, extruded gunnels with SureMount and J-Hook accessory mounting systems, flip-up cleats, safety bow rails, removable ski pylon, transom swim platform with ladder, bow trim switch, and a ShoreArm’r bunk trailer. You also get to choose from fourteen colour combinations and from gray or tan interior accenting.
Notable available options include a 150, 175, or 200 horsepower Mercury® outboard to which you may add Active Trim, digital gauges, and Vessel View. You may also want vinyl cockpit flooring to which you may then add snap-in MarineMat. You may want a Premium steering wheel, power seat pedestals, a full bow fill-in cushion, bow bolsters, helm and/or passenger reclining seat with armrests, or a butt seat.
A Sun Top with or without full enclosure panels, tonneau or travel cover, removable table, washdown system, upgraded stereo with six Rockford Fosgate speakers and Pandora capability, under gunnel blue LED lighting, port side rod rack, 2 or 3 bank battery charger, handy port and starboard bow cargo netting, almost twenty SureMount accessories, and sixteen possible trailer upgrades are all available.
Packaged options include a full enclosure canvas package, Environmental Protection Package, and a Midnight Edition Package of black detailing throughout. There are also eight optional colour schemes. With all of this to choose both individually and/or in packages, rest assured that your 1950 Sportfish will most likely be slightly different from any other you may see.
