Boat Review by: Richard Crowder
Don’t let the model description “center console” fool you into thinking this second largest of Boston Whaler’s seven model Outrage series is simply a daytime fishing or utility rig. That would be so far from the truth. Yes, the 380 Outrage is certainly an offshore fishing platform bristling with every conceivable fishing feature imaginable, but it is also much more.
It is an overnighter with respectable accommodation, a cruiser with comfortable seating, and a great entertaining platform as well. You can select from a substantial list of available accessories to personalize the 380 Outrage to augment its most commendable list of standard equipment and to maximize your preferences for on-water enjoyment.
The helm area is often the centre of attention on a center console boat, and there is lots to explore on the 380 Outrage. Facing the dash are three bolster style seats each with fold down armrests. The centre driver’s seat is electrically adjustable while the outer two have manual fore and aft adjustment. A molded-in console footrest includes a fold-down standing platform for the driver and starboard passenger. A stainless tilting steering wheel has the expected comfortable steering assist knob.
A custom stitched dash visor includes a recessed storage tray with USB and 12-volt charging receptacles. Across the top of the dash just below this visor is a full row of DC rocker control switches with illuminated text. Below that and immediately in front of the driver is dedicated space for your choice of flush-mounted navigation displays up to sixteen inches. You may optionally select from one or two Raymarine Axiom Pro RVX or XL electronics / navigations packages. To these packages you may then add radar, satellite weather, AIS transceiver, and a thermal night vision camera.
To the right of the steering wheel and above the Mercury DTS and optional joystick piloting control is the head unit of the Fusion® Apollo MS-RA770 AM/FM stereo with MP3, WiFi, USB and Aux input, iPod, iPhone, Android compatible via integrated Bluetooth, optional Sirius XM ready and with 4.3-inch touchscreen controls integrated with the Raymarine navigation package. It comes with remote controls with LCD displays in the cabin and the bow, and includes eight JL Audio speakers plus subwoofer and amplifier.
A custom powder-coated aluminum frame supports the hardtop with integrated high curved tempered glass windshield with power opening vent, washer and wiper, defogger system, and full height side glass. Along with an upper lockable electronics box is the Mercury SmartCraft Vessel View 7-inch colour touchscreen. There are several multi-coloured recessed LED courtesy and chart lights inside and both forward and aft flood lights on top.
On the aft side of the helm is a well upholstered and padded comfortable two-person couch with insulated cooler beneath the seat cushion. An optional 40-gallon livewell is available in place of the cooler. The couch seat back doubles as a “stow-and-go” flip up prep surface with teak top and poly cutting board. A pullout stainless refrigerator/freezer is under the port side of this couch and storage drawers under the starboard side.
A fold away three-person stern bench seat faces the couch on the aft side of the helm and an optional fold out starboard side bench seat is available to provide almost full U-shaped cockpit seating. A pair of teak or fiberglass cockpit tables with dedicated storage are optionally available to service these seats. On the port side of the cockpit is a molded opening dive door with removable stainless ladder. On the transom top is a huge pressurized 60-gallon livewell with acrylic lid, blue interior, removable divider, dual red LED lighting, and a 2000 GPH pump.
The bow area provides full surround seating with a stretch out lounge complete with three fold-down armrests on the forward face of the helm console, along with full surround bow seating with flip-up backrests and storage pockets with blue LED lighting beneath the seats. A stereo remote, speakers, and dual USB charging port are within the bow seating area. An insulated fishbox is found in the floor between the seats. Lockable front console storage includes a pair of 5-gallon buckets and an insulated 36-quart portable cooler.
A lockable acrylic sliding door on the portside console leads to a cozy cabin below deck with solid teak flooring and convertible U-shaped double berth. A 12,000 BTU air conditioning unit serves this cabin as well feeding dash outlets for the driver. A galley unit with storage cabinets features a microwave and vanity with sink. A starboard side separate molded fiberglass head compartment provides a Vacu-Flush® toilet with teak fold-down cover, shower wand, and storage drawers. A skylight, side lights, and a pair of opening portholes augment the diffused courtesy and full overhead LED cabin lighting. Dual USB receptacles plus a remote stereo control and speakers serve the cabin area.
Mercury Verado outboard power from 900 to a maximum rating total of 1600 horsepower is available from triple 300’s up to quad 400’s, giving a top speed ranging from 54-59 miles per hour. Several iterations of these engines are available in white or black along with Joystick Piloting, hydraulic and electronic steering, skyhook, autopilot, and shadow mode technology.
Additional notable standard features include anchor windlass with remote, hot water heater, a pair of in-floor cockpit fishboxes with pump-out, swim platform with recessed telescoping boarding ladder, a total of twenty rod holders, cockpit toe rails, full coaming bolsters bow to stern, a pair of battery chargers, bow thruster, trim tabs, both fresh and raw water washdown spigots, 7.5 kW gasoline generator, and dual 30-amp shorepower.

Also choose Raymarine Augmented Reality, Raymarine Autopilot, active engine trim, satellite radio, RealVision 3D sonar, theft deterrent system with Whaler Watch mobile app, and Vessel View Mobile.
A deluxe leaning post (replacing aft-facing couch) with bait prep centre, electric grill, sink, and pressurized livewell, or a summer kitchen leaning post (also replacing aft-facing couch) with electric grill, sink with cutting board, and additional drawer storage can be had as well as a pair of fold-down trolling seats and competition, premium, or radial outriggers,Seakeeper gyroscopic stabilizer, 12 kW diesel generator, underwater lighting, additional helm refrigerator/freezer, electric or manual cockpit sunshade, manual bow sunshade, electric bow teak or synthetic table, spotlight, freezer plates in fishboxes, automatic engine flushing system, bow dive tank holders, premium audio package, separate helm deck 18,000 BTU air conditioning system, various canvas covers and enclosures, and a wide selection of coloured hull and graphics options all contribute to making your time on board more enjoyable.
