Flats and Bay Boats

Available mostly in fibreglass but also in aluminum, the terms “flats” and “bay” boats are often used interchangeably even by the manufacturers and the term “skiff” is also sometimes used to describe these relatively shallow draft mostly center console designs.

However, it is generally accepted that these coastal water fishing boats are called flats boats when intended for tidal flats or shoreline situations and bay boats when utilized in protected bays, coves and reef situations. Flats boats generally range from ten or twelve feet up to about eighteen feet and bay boats from perhaps seventeen up to mid-twenties feet in length and at first glance can easily be mistaken for a general purpose center console boat. But all true flats and bay boats are dedicated fishing rigs with sufficient outboard power to get you quickly to the fishing hot spots. Some even offer tunnel drive hulls to allow even shallower water use. Many hardcore fishing options are available depending on the type of fishing and the type of water you intend to frequent.
