Suzuki first entered into outboard engine manufacturing in 1965 with the introduction of the D55, a 5.5 HP, single cylinder, two-stroke model. Fast forward to 2026 and Suzuki is a dominant global leader in four-stroke technology with significant competitive advantages throughout the lineup – and the lineup is impressive. With offerings ranging from 2.5 HP all the way to their flagship 350, Suzuki has solutions for any boat application.

We were invited to the west coast of Canada – Port Alberni, BC, to be exact – to test several power plants and I was super pumped to start with a pair of Suzuki DF300BTX outboards. First impressions last forever and arriving at the ramp to see a gorgeous looking boat dressed in white with color match white engines was perfect. Our test pairing was mounted on a British Columbia-built, heavy gauge Raider 300 Offshore – a beauty of a west coast fishing, family, overnighting, and adventure touring package.

We spent our first couple of hours with the package on the trailer in the parking lot, which afforded us the best opportunity to get up close and personal with several of her key features. Having the owner present was tremendous and we really dove into the ownership benefits of these engines.

Let’s take a closer look at a few of my favorites.

Counter-rotating dual props – each engine swings one prop to the right and another to the left. This delivers exceptional ‘grip’ underwater – think torque. Twin props also mean the gear diameter can be reduced, which affords the development of a more streamlined, hydrodynamic gearcase, which then provides optimal cooling. Even the props themselves have been meticulously designed. With twin 3-blade props you get wicked acceleration (holeshots) and increased performance throughout the RPM range. Add in high reverse thrust props and this gearcase design allows you to become a ‘dockstar’ delivering easy low speed maneuverability capability.

The powerhead is a robust 4.39 liter (4,390 cc) muscle mass assembled in a narrow V6 configuration, with double overhead cams and an RPM range up to 6,300. The engine cowling features a unique ‘Dual Louver’ and ‘Direct Intake System’ that forces clean dry air down to the throttle body to deliver optimal performance (and more power to play).

Suzuki also utilizes an offset driveshaft which pulls the center of gravity forward on the transom while yielding lower vibration and allowing the fitment of the compact 55-degree V powerhead. The offset driveshaft feature two stages of gear reduction which supports the use of larger props for quick acceleration and phenomenal top speed.

The lean burn control system optimizes fuel/air mixtures resulting in enhanced fuel economy, which saves you dollars at the fuel pump. Her 2.29:1 gear ratio further supports Suzuki’s commitment to fuel economy while also satisfying owners’ desire for exceptional torque. Variable valve timing optimizes the opening and closing of the intake valves based on engine RPM, enhancing torque and improving low- to mid-range acceleration.

The ‘Troll Mode’ is a simple and user-friendly system that increases or decreases engine RPM by increments of 50 from idle to 1,200 RPM. Awesome solution in fishing packages.

For saltwater use, Suzuki provides multiple layers of protection. The aluminum alloy components receive an anti-corrosion finish, followed by an epoxy primer undercoat, an acrylic resin basecoat, and an acrylic resin topcoat (did I mention the sexy white paint?). Sacrificial zinc anodes are strategically placed in critical areas including the head, exhaust, transom bracket, and cavitation plate.

The helm station experience (available in single and dual stations) is a whole new experience thanks to Suzuki Precision Control. This is a computer-based system that replaces mechanical throttle and shift cables with electronic wiring harnesses for select single or multi-engine installations. Joystick functionality simplifies docking and low-speed maneuvering. The operational experience of running this technology is simply exceptional.

From a performance perspective, we found the DF 300 showed very strong. Our test boat, the Raider 300 Offshore, weighed roughly 8,000 pounds. We ran from Port Alberni to the Pacific Ocean fully loaded with fuel, gear, three people, and camera equipment. Holeshots were a very healthy (and quiet) 6.07 seconds. That’s simply fantastic. We found the package ran (in the owners words) at her optimal speed of 25 knots (29 MPH) with RPMs synced on both DF300s at 3,900 RPM. In large waters with relative calm, we comfortably and peacefully wound her out to 43 knots (50 MPH) at 5,650 RPM. The owner spoke candidly that while he could change the props to find a little more RPM and perhaps a mile or two more top speed, his focus was holeshot, mid-range, and fuel economy. I couldn’t agree more.

What I personally loved the most about the Suzuki DF300BTX’s was the lack of vibration and the overall performance – both the hole shots and the top speed results were super strong in both categories.

There are some great outboard brands on the market. Suzuki calls theirs the Ultimate Outboard Motor and the DF300BTX models live up to the name. They are without a doubt worth a look when you are shopping.
