Morgan Huntley, holder of a 50-ton USCG Masters license and with previous boatbuilding experience, acquired Vanquish Boats in 2010 and moved the operations to Newport, Rhode Island. Naval architect Doug Zurn, founder of Zurn yachts with over 150 power and sail yachts to his credit, gives Vanquish boats the highly recognizable distinct exterior lines and features that are emblematic of New England boat-building design traditions.

For 2016, Vanquish offers two 24 models; a Runabout and a Center Console, both inboard powered, and four 26 models of which all but one are outboard powered. That one, the 26 DCE (Dual Console Electric) is uniquely battery powered electric with a nominal 20-hour operating time between charges.

At 25-feet, 8-inches length overall on a relatively narrow 8-foot beam, the 24 Runabout echoes the New England “look” with its bow forward design, substantial bow flare, centre-cockpit engine box, two-toned non-skid cockpit sole, and slight tumblehome of the hull sides toward the stern. But as with all Vanquish models, the construction of the 24 Runabout involves the latest in technology with “wood free, rot free design” including closed cell foam core vacuum bagging, vinyl ester epoxy resin hull laminate, and a one-piece carbon fiber reinforced hull and deck liner.

Standard cockpit seating includes a full-width stern bench, a two-seater bench at the front of the engine box, plus adjustable captain and co-captain flip-up bolster seats. Storage is found within the bench seating and upholstery is your choice of Nautolex vinyl or Sunbrella® canvas material. Between the two helm seats is an in-floor watersports storage locker. The engine box is electrically raised for easy access

A huge 95-cubic foot storage locker is provided within the closed off bow area and accessible from the cockpit. A forepeak anchor locker is accessible from the foredeck which itself further emphasises the New England look with its standard high stainless steel bow rail. The curved windshield with side wings is capped with a polished stainless steel header.

Standard power for the Vanquish 24 Runabout is a 330 hp Crusader 5.7 HO MPI straight drive inboard engine with the propeller positioned within a drive pocket or tunnel molded into the hull bottom along the keel toward the transom. This pocket achieves two major advantages; keeping the shaft and propeller closer to horizontal for more efficient propulsion plus reducing the boat’s draft to a relatively shallow 19-inches. An additional benefit is that it also provides greater protection for the propeller and steering rudder.

This standard power provides a factory estimated cruising speed of 32 mph and a top speed of 40 mph. Optional power is available from a 375 hp Crusader 6.0 HO MPI gasoline engine or from a Yanmar 6BY2-260 diesel engine. You could also select a Marine Power Jet Drive package.

A very practical-looking driver’s side pod mounted on top of the full-width dash with passenger side glove box houses the standard analog instrumentation consisting of an hour meter plus GPS speedometer, tachometer, fuel, volt, oil pressure, and temperature gauges. A USB charging port and 12-volt outlet are also provided. A stainless steel Edson steering wheel with hydraulic steering is standard equipment as is a foredeck-mounted trumpet horn and LED cockpit courtesy lighting. A relatively small molded swim platform with retractable 3-step boarding ladder is standard as of course are the traditional bow and stern flag masts.

An extensive list of optional equipment allows you to really “New England” your 24 Runabout to your heart’s content. For example, choose between standard or custom hull colours, Flexiteek or real teak cockpit flooring and/or swim platform inlay, a mahogany or teak trim package, and even a varnished mahogany transom. For seating you can select snazzy Newport XR helm seats with armrests or a Premium Seating Upgrade which replaces the co-captain seat and bench in front of the engine box with an L-shaped lounge seat with storage.

This seating upgrade then allows you to further choose a pumpout toilet within this lounge and/or an integrated cooler and/or refrigerator. Other options include trim tabs, bimini top, mooring cover, engine box sunpad, ultraleather upholstery, cockpit table, raw water washdown, transom shower, battery charger, docking and/or underwater lighting, Fusion stereo, Garmin electronics, and even a bow thruster or an anchor windlass.

Vanquish says, “Our goal is to create a line that future generations will see as collectibles” and its 24 Runabout certainly exemplifies all of the necessary attributes to achieve that goal.
