Boat Review by: Richard Crowder
Built in France, the European pleasure yacht influences are much in evidence in the Prestige 500. This is the second largest of the Flybridge Line of five models from forty-two to fifty-eight feet. Prestige also offers an additional nine models of Coupe′s and Yachts from forty-two to seventy-five feet.
The 500 is a standard three stateroom, two head layout plus an optional crew quarters room. The mid-ship master stateroom with en-suite head is completely private and accessed by a dedicated staircase on the starboard side of the salon.
Satin finished wood cabinetry and trim abound along with light two-toned soft fabrics and a custom bedspread on the island berth with mattress battens and twin night tables centred on the aft bulkhead. To port is a full-height hanging locker plus an upholstered two-person facing conversation or breakfast “booth” with table. To starboard is a dresser. Removable carpet is standard.
Indirect lighting plus large hullside fixed windows on both sides with opening portlights provide lots of light. A Bose “Acoustimass 3” stereo system with DVD/MP3 player is optionally available for this stateroom as is a bulkhead-mounted LED 32-inch TV. The bright en-suite private head features a glass vessel sink, vanity with mirror, electric head, and separate shower.
The forward guest stateroom is accessed by a staircase at the front of the salon. To port at the foot of this staircase is the entry door to the third stateroom equipped with two single berths which may be converted to a double plus a hanging locker and removable carpet.
To starboard at the foot of the staircase is the entry door to the day head which doubles as the en-suite head for the forward guest stateroom. This head is similarly equipped as the master head. The guest stateroom features a pedestal double berth with mattress battens that is convertible into two single berths. There is a full-height hanging locker and removable carpet.
The forward socializing raised portion of the salon features a large U-shaped lounge cum dinette with table occupying the entire port side. On the starboard side aft of the lower helm is a two person lounge seat. Removable carpet here is standard with optional wooden floor available. Also optionally available are electric window blinds, a deluxe table with electric pedestal, and a LED 24” TV and a Bose AM/FM/CD/MP3 player.
The aft portion of the salon features the port side L-shaped galley. Standard equipment includes a single stainless steel sink, refrigerator, convection microwave, and gas stove with hood. An induction electric stove is optional as is a dish washer and ice maker.
Through the glass salon enclosure doors, a transom bench seat serves the cockpit while a starboard side transom gate provides access to the swim platform with boarding ladder. Teak covering on the cockpit floor, swim platform, and flybridge steps is standard. A teak cockpit table is optional as is a cockpit electric awning, an extended hydraulic swim platform, and not often available on North American yachts of this size but most practical, an integrated stern hydraulic gangway for simplifying stern entry from a dock.
The huge flybridge features a two-person bench helm seat for the unusual port side helm console location. Next to this is an overlarge sundeck lounge with mattress, aft of which is an L-shaped lounge seat with table. Behind the helm seat is a standard refreshment centre with sink, refrigerator, and grill. Bridge options include teak flooring, bridge cover, and bimini top.
Standard power for the Prestige 500 is from twin 435 horsepower Volvo D6 IPS 600 diesels with joystick. With this power, cruising speed is said to be 24 knots (about 28 mph) and a top speed of 29 knots (about 33 mph). Aside from the comprehensive standard Volvo diesel digital engine instrumentation, you will want to choose appropriate navigation electronics for both upper and lower helms.
In addition, you may wish to add cruise control, cockpit joystick control, active positioning, various cameras, and if you plan to be around commercial traffic or busy ports, the Raymarine AIS 650 (Automatic Identification System) transceiver.
You may also wish to choose reverse cycle air conditioning/heating, an 11 kVA diesel generator, washer/dryer, spotlight, trim tabs, a foredeck sunpad, foredeck canopy, second mooring windlass to augment the standard one, and if you don’t choose the aft crew cabin with its single berth, sink, and head, this room can optionally become a dinghy garage.
Three cabins, two heads, two helms, subdued elegance, and expansive flybridge - the Prestige 500 offers it all.
