Boat Review by: Richard Crowder
The Prestige 420 Flybridge is the newest yet smallest of fourteen models of Prestige Yachts from forty-two to seventy feet. Prestige itself is part of the multi-brand world-wide sail, power, and yacht-building empire of Jeanneau/Groupe Beneteau of France. These fourteen Prestige models include Flybridge, Coupe, and Sportbridge configurations. In fact, the newest 420 Coupe is virtually identical to this 420 Flybridge only sans the bridge.
The sleek exterior profile of the 420 belies its spacious and bright interior. With almost a full wrap-around glass-enclosed salon it also has large port and starboard hullside fixed windows. With opening ports, these hullside windows bring natural lighting and ventilation to both the master and guest staterooms on the lower level.
Spaciousness aboard the 420 begins with the accommodating, low to the water integrated swim platform. A hot and cold shower plus a large transom storage compartment are features of this platform. This storage compartment is also accessible from the cockpit.
A portside transom gate leads to the cockpit with an L-shaped bench seat extending from the transom gate across the stern and forward on the starboard side to the step-up access to the walk-around to the bow. This walk-around is repeated on the port side just past the stainless steel ladder with teak steps for flybridge access. The flybridge overhang provides almost full weather protection to the cockpit, and full enclosure curtains are available as is an electric retractable awning. Teak flooring is available for the cockpit, swim platform, side deck walk-arounds, and the flybridge.
A four-piece full height sliding glass door opens for ventilation and social interaction between the cockpit and salon. Immediately to port upon entering the salon is a U-shaped galley convenient for entertaining and serving for both the salon and cockpit. Standard equipment includes a stainless steel sink, two-burner stove, refrigerator, freezer, and lots of cupboard and preparation space. Twin drawer fridge and/or freezer, a wine cabinet, and ice maker are all optionally available.
A large U-shaped dinette fills the balance of the port side of the salon with a sofa opposite the double wide helm seat. A flatscreen TV rises up from within the bulkhead ahead of the dinette. Pleated blinds on the salon side windows and wood flooring are standard as is the master unit for the AM/FM stereo with CD, MP3, and Bluetooth connectivity with speakers in all areas of the 420. The windshield is fitted with twin wipers with washers on the outside and defogger on the inside.
Following European norm in a yacht this size, the Prestige 420 is a two stateroom, single head layout. The large head compartment to port features a separate shower, electric toilet, sink, vanity, mirror, storage, and is en-suite to the aft master stateroom with its queen size bed flanked by night tables and storage drawers along both sides, as well as a dedicated hanging locker.
The forward VIP stateroom features a pedestal bed of similar size along with lots of storage and a hanging locker. Opposite the head compartment is literally a walk-in closet loaded with additional storage and hanging lockers and suitable for the available washer/dryer combination. This area may be optionally replaced with a second head compartment.
The flybridge is huge and accommodating with a large L-shaped seat with triangular table filling the aft starboard side. The forward starboard side is a giant two-section sunlounge with adjustable backrests. Between this and the stern seat is a cabinet with sink which may be fitted as a mini galley. The upper helm console with a fully adjustable swivel helm bucket chair occupies the forward port side of the bridge. A hardtop or bimini top are available for the flybridge.
The Prestige 420 comes with twin diesel V-drive power from Cummins in 380 horsepower each with electronic controls and with or without joysticks and in twin 425 horsepower with joysticks. Prestige claims base power will deliver about 35 mph top speed with cruising at about 25 mph with a range of approximately 240 miles.
Additional standard equipment includes reverse cycle heating/air conditioning, a 7.5 kW generator, anchor windlass, foredeck sunpad, and hull osmosis barrier coating. Notable additional options include several woodwork, flooring, and upholstery choices, electronic, sound, entertainment, and navigation packages, hydraulic swim platform, teak cockpit table, cockpit filler cushion, bow thruster, remote spotlight, radar, additional Raymarine navigation, automatic trim tabs, extra joystick control in cockpit, and inverter.
The Prestige 420 Flybridge is just that – a prestigious and luxuriously accommodating yacht.
