Boat Review by: Richard Crowder
The Solstice DC 230 (Dual Console) is one of only two such models in Harris’ 2016 lineup of twenty-four primary models in seven series ranging from sixteen to twenty-seven feet. In addition, there are many dozens of different floorplan layouts available across the lineup from which to choose.
The Solstice series of five models from twenty-two to twenty-six feet is labelled by Harris as its “Premium” line in that, “the Solstice Series offers the greatest variety of layouts, tower options and styling selections within the Harris line-up.”
Three floorplans are offered, all three of which are identical from the standard helm and passenger upscale Ultralux high back, reclining chairs complete with armrests and built-in headrests forward past the molded “dual consoles” right to the front of the bow. Only bow and stern gates are provided in the three floorplans which results in the maximization of seating.
The two consoles are located just slightly forward of midship and immediately ahead of each is a curved-fronted, comfortable three person each, lounge seat filling each side right to the bow. In the standard configuration, a pair of similar lounge seats, comfortable two persons each, are along each side of the stern area from behind the helm chairs to the stern fence panels with its center gate.
One upgraded floorplan replaces the aft port and starboard stern lounge seats with two upscale single-person individual rear-facing loungers with armrests. The third floorplan, again an upgrade, has a forward-facing three-person stern lounge seat immediately behind the two helm chairs stretching from the port side to the starboard entry walkway plus an aft-facing similar length “transom” lounge seat attached to and immediately behind it.
All Harris furniture is constructed with Rotocast synthetic seat bases with built-in air ventilation and water drainage system and storage is provided within all lounge seating. Standard interior upholstery colour is Desert Camel with Almond, and French Gray available along with the upgraded Pillow Top design available in all three colours. Standard flooring is Cognac carpeting in the main area with vinyl flooring covering the aft deck.
The molded driver’s helm of the DC 230 with a built-in storage compartment has a straightforward tiered layout with an upper pod containing a multi-function full gauge cluster. A digital depth sounder is also standard as is a 12-volt receptacle, tilt steering, Polk stereo with four Jenson speakers, and a removable tinted windscreen.
A soft-sided cooler is provided as is a lockable glovebox in the similar-looking passenger console. Also standard is a 10-foot bimini top, mooring cover, under deck LED docking lights, and a four step, telescoping, stainless steel boarding ladder.
Perhaps the most rewarding aspect of ordering a new Solstice DC 230, aside from the anticipation of ownership and use, is the incredibly wide and varied selection of options from which to choose to have it exactly and uniquely the way you want it. A few of these major option choices stand out.
First is a full-width, walk-thru windshield not only for protection from the elements but to also drastically upgrade the look of your boat and add to its practicality. Choose a sporty low profile smoked glass windshield with black or stainless steel frame or go full out with a regular height, “high profile” clear glass windshield with black, stainless, or aluminum frame.
Next, choose one of two available performance packages which provide a center tube plus various performance upgrades that can allow you to power your DC 230 up to the maximum rated 300 horsepower. These packages also allow you to choose other options including an in-floor ski locker plus a ski pylon.
Choose from eight panel and six accent colour choices with coordinated bimini canvas colours, an incredible selection of bimini top options including an electric bimini, a Delta tower, full bimini enclosure, etc. Twelve choices of combinations of carpeting and vinyl coverings for the main and aft decks are available.
Add various table upgrades, a bow filler jumpseat, six audio system upgrade packages, a Euro-look, six spoke, polished steering wheel and one of the neatest options, a Glass Dash touch screen display providing navionics plus instrumentation plus systems control plus GPS-based speed control.
A fishing and a convenience package are also available as are many, many individual lighting and convenience options including even an auto-retract boarding ladder. Mercury or Honda outboard power choices from 115 to 300 horsepower will more than satisfy all cruising and watersports needs.
Harris says, the Solstice DC 230 “draw(s) upon sport-boat influences, bridging the gap between a pontoon and fibreglass bowrider.”
