Boat Review by: Richard Crowder
Blackfin offers five models from twenty-one to thirty-three feet, four of which are center consoles, the other being a dual console, and all are outfitted as hard core, big water fishing machines with built-in flexibility for all-round family recreation and enjoyment.
The 242 CC center console is the second smallest in the Blackfin lineup but it is not a small boat by any stretch. As a big water boat it may seem small at twenty-four feet, six inches length overall including the integrated swim platform but it has very deep freeboard, a decent bow flare for deflecting waves, an abnormally wide eight foot, ten inch beam, plus a very deep-vee twenty-two degree deadrise hull.
This boat is designed and built to take almost whatever you want to throw at it and with its carbon fiber reinforced hull, it is built to withstand any punishment along the way while all the while giving you a smooth and solid ride. All of these attributes account for its maximum horsepower rating of up to 450 total. With this rating, Blackfin offers single Mercury or Yamaha power from 300 to 400 horsepower or twin 150’s up to twin 225’s.
The fibreglass self-bailing cockpit inner liner with non-skid surface features almost complete wrap-around padded upholstered coaming bolsters. A safety recessed stainless steel grab rail surrounds the entire bow. U-shaped bow seating offers insulated and drained storage beneath the cushions. Self-storing removable backrests encourage forward facing lounging on this bow seating.
An in-floor storage compartment is found forward in the bow plus a foredeck anchor locker. An anchor windlass with thru-hull roller is optional. The forward face of the center console provides another very comfortable one-person seat with extra high padded back support. The forward face of the console opens with this entire seat attached to reveal a head compartment equipped with a Porta-Potti, port lite, and huge available storage.
Centered within the transom is a foldaway two-person bench seat to starboard of which is the transom walk-thru with door to the full-width swim platform complete with a concealed flip-down telescoping boarding ladder. The rear-slanted top face of the transom provides three stainless steel rod holders while the port side end of the transom features a 24-gallon “seaquarium flow-through” insulated baitwell complete with blue/white lights and a cutting board lid.
On each side of the cockpit are large in-floor insulated fishboxes with macerated pump-outs and fibreglass lids. All hatches and lids are finished both sides using CMT (Closed Mold Technology). The cockpit also features stainless steel toe rails, under-gunnel rod holders, plus a pair of stainless steel rod holders within each gunnel. There is also a raw water washdown faucet plus blue/white LED courtesy lighting and pull-up stainless steel mooring cleats.
The two-person leaning post cum helm seat with flip-up bolsters and armrests faces a stainless steel destroyer-style tilt steering wheel with urethane grip and power assist standard. A high protective acrylic windscreen provides wind and weather protection while the extra large standard fibreglass hardtop with your choice of white or black powder coated aluminum framework and overhead LED lighting provides even more protection.
The large flat dash face will easily accommodate your addition of one or two large navigation/fishing screens and/or engine instrumentation. It also houses the standard Fusion AM/FM satellite-ready stereo with MP3 adapter and complete with amplifier and four JL speakers with LED lighting. Three dual 12-Volt/USB outlets are also provided as are the switches for the standard auto-retracting trim tabs with indicators. Beneath the helm seat is storage space for the 45-quart Yeti Tundra carry-on cooler.
Standard hull colour is Blackfin white and you have five other colours from which to choose. You may also want to match your hull colour choice for the underside of the hardtop. For fishing, you may want to add hardtop rod holders or even Taco outriggers with carbon telescoping poles. Choose Garmin or Raymarine twelve-inch GPS/chartplotters each with FUSION-Link. A FLIR thermal night vision camera is also available.
You may want an electric head upgrade with holding tank, a Premium stereo upgrade package, battery charger, pressurized freshwater system with transom shower and washdown faucet, a stainless steel waterski pylon, underwater lights, swim platform and/or helm floor Sea-Dek overlay padding, a bow cocktail table which doubles as a bow filler casting platform, a handy bow shade, plus console and leaning post covers.
Yes, the Blackfin 242 CC is a strong and focused fishing machine but it can be outfitted to satisfy the most discerning of family desires for fun, entertaining, watersports, and cruising.
