Boat Review by: Richard Crowder
G3, a Yamaha Boat Company, offers eight models from sixteen to twenty-one feet in its riveted aluminum “Deep-Vee” Angler series of fishing boats for 2019. Some of these models are side console designs; others, like this V17SF, are full walk-thru windshield dual-console designs.
The Angler V17 SF is a through and through fishing machine designed for rough water with its forty inches of bow depth and 13-degrees of deadrise built into its hull bottom. The riveted three-piece hull construction features G3’s GX² ™ Double-Plated Bow and Bottom utilizing .080 gauge aluminum for both. The transom is all aluminum too. But even though outfitted for serious fishing, the Angler V17 SF also offers standard and optional features suitable for the entire family for cruising and watersports activities.
Flexibility is the key to this boat’s design. You can choose either Black Metallic or Burgundy for the hull sides complete with custom graphics and you can further choose either carpet or vinyl for the interior surfaces, including both the bow and stern casting decks. The high three-piece windshield with protecting curved outer corners and opening centre section provides frontal weather protection for the cockpit when underway.
More flexibility is provided with the seating arrangement. Two high back padded fishing seats are provided standard and may be moved to any of the four floor mounting locations in the cockpit or to the one on the bow platform or to one of two provided on the stern platform. In addition, two flip-up jump seats are provided standard within the stern casting platform. The port side jump seat has general storage beneath the seat cushion. Additional fishing seats with pedestals or a bike seat with adjustable pole are optionally available.
Flexible power options are offered to suit your boating requirements. You may choose Yamaha outboard power from 90 to a maximum of 150 horsepower and further choose an optional Yamaha 9.9 HP kicker motor. You probably may also want to select the optional Minn Kota® 24-volt bow-mounted trolling motor.
The modern and attractive looking molded driver’s and passenger’s consoles are also most functional in design with the driver being pampered with a standard tilt wheel with hydraulic steering. Five Faria gauges provide readouts for speed, RPM, fuel, trim, and volts plus red warning lights for overheating and low oil. The engine may be trimmed up or down from three locations on board. More flexibility.
The upper starboard flat surface of the driver’s dash will accommodate your choice of three available optional Lowrance® four, seven, or nine inch GPS/fishfinder units, whichever best suits your fishing and boating requirements. The passenger console has not only a lockable glove box but also a molded-in storage tray to hold change, a wallet, sunglasses, sunscreen, etc. as well as a molded-in cupholder, a twin to the driver’s side molded-in cupholder.
A long, lockable rod storage compartment fills the port side of the cockpit while a smaller compartment on the starboard side aft of the Yamaha motor control unit serves for general storage. The step-up from the cockpit through the opening centre section of the windshield forms part of another lockable rod storage locker featuring both separating rod tubes (4) plus open storage for larger rods.
The bow casting deck offers three large general storage lockers each with a Roto-molded insert for easy cleaning and with raised outer lips to help prevent water intrusion. There is a fourth smaller general storage compartment plus a port side, 20 (US) gallon aerated livewell. A second standard 15 (US) gallon aerated livewell is found centred between the two jump seats on the stern casting platform. These livewells are fed by a 500 GPH (gallons per hour) pump.
Additional standard equipment on the Angler V17 SF includes a Bear® powder-coated Black painted Trail Guard® 4-inch tubular steel trailer with locking detachable tongue, a starboard side transom-mounted swim platform with flip-down boarding ladder, automatic bilge pump, accessory track gunnel design, and flip-up mooring cleats. Available notable options include a galvanized or roller trailer upgrade with accessories, an eight foot Power Pole®, and a waterski tow hoop.
Yes, for serious fishing with flexibility for family fun on the water, the G3 Angler V17 SF has it all.
