Boat Review by: Richard Crowder
At almost twenty-two feet in length overall on a full eight-foot, six-inch beam, the M-22 is the newest entry in Monterey’s ten model M series of sporty bowriders from twenty to twenty-six feet. Four are outboard powered; five are sterndrive powered while one, the almost twenty-six foot MX-6 Surf, is a dedicated surf boat with a forward-facing sterndrive. Monterey also offers five additional series of multiple models of runabouts, sport boats, and sport yachts up to thirty-six feet.
This new M-22 provides almost full surround seating to accommodate as many guests as you would probably want to have on board and offers standard and optional features to satisfy all forms of your boating enjoyment from cruising to exploring to the many forms of watersports activities.
A usefully large and molded-in swim platform complete with a starboard side covered and recessed four-step telescoping boarding ladder provides ready access to enjoy all watersports activities. A starboard side transom walk-thru with a handy storage compartment below provides ready access to the cockpit. A standard filler cushion covers this walk-thru to complete a full-beam sizable transom sundeck suitable for four persons to stretch out.
A standard seat cushion with backrest fills in the forward section of this walk-thru to form part of a full beam and full portside L-shaped lounge seat which extends the full way forward to the passenger console. Lots of comfortable and flexible seating here as a folding backrest at the forward end of this lounge provides forward-facing front passenger seating or aft-facing lounge seating for entertaining or for watersports spotting.
Storage is found beneath all seat cushions of this L-lounge with dedicated storage under the centre stern seat cushion for the standard removable 48-quart carry-on cooler. More storage is provided beneath the sundeck beside the engine and more again is found within the cockpit floor. This compartment is ideal to store your watersports accessories such as waterskis or a wakeboard or tube as it has a “dry deck liner” to keep stored items above the bilge bottom.
Being a twenty-two footer, the U-shaped bow seating area is large and allows full stretch out lounging augmented by backrest cushions on the forward faces of both the driver and passenger consoles. Interior gunnel sizable cushioned padding almost completely surrounds this bow seating area providing comfortable backrests throughout.
The two backrest cushions on the forward face of the consoles open to provide access to more storage within each helm console. Two recessed and molded-in drinkholders are centre mounted on each side of this bow seating area and a safety grab handle is also provided on each side. More storage is found beneath all seat cushions. A large foredeck anchor locker is also provided. Bow filler cushions are optionally available.
An adjustable driver’s bucket seat with flip-up forward bolster faces a standard sporty tilt steering wheel on the fibreglass dash featuring a functional upholstered shading eyebrow visor around the instrument cluster. Three multi-function medallion fog-resistant digital gauges with low glare night lighting provide the necessary operational readouts. A helm stereo remote is optionally available as is a digital depth sounder. You may also want to choose the optional Raymarine AX7 chartplotter/sonar.
The passenger helm provides a lockable glovebox plus the standard Fusion satellite-ready AM/FM stereo with Bluetooth compatibility, an MP3 adapter, and USB port. Four Rockford Fosgate 6.5-inch speakers are standard; two in the bow and two in the cockpit. Additional notable standard equipment includes a total of eleven stainless steel drinkholders and a ski tow bracket.
Standard hull gelcoat colour is Arctic Ice with graphics. Six additional colours of hull side and/or hull bottom are optionally available. A vinylester barrier bottom coat is standard with the M-22. MerCruiser 4.5L sterndrive engine choices in 200 or 250 horsepower with Alpha or Bravo III outdrives are available providing top speeds of between 42 and 48 mph according to Monterey.
Additional available optional equipment to allow you to personalize your M-22 to maximize your boating pleasures include a white or black hinged wakeboard tower, a removable ski-tow pylon, battery charger, transom outdrive trim switch, automatic fire extinguishing system, bimini top, bow and cockpit covers, transom stereo remote control, pull-up cleats, woven cockpit flooring, plus swim platform and cockpit inlay in brown or gray SeaDek.
Monterey’s new M-22 offers all of the flexibility you could ever want in a comfortably sized bowrider to satisfy almost all recreational boating requirements for cruising and watersports relaxation and fun.
