2019 Skeeter FX20

Boat Reviews

Boat Review by: Richard Crowder

Over seventy years ago, founder Holmes Thurmond, after observing the very pointed design of the first fishing boat he built, named it “Skeeter” since it looked like a mosquito. Today, the Skeeter name is renowned as a serious fishing brand offering twenty-two models in seven series from nineteen to twenty-four feet.

The FX20 is one of six models in Skeeter’s Bass Boat series of twenty and twenty-one footers. Designed and rigged as a tournament bass boat where getting from one hot fishing hole to the next quickly is of utmost importance, the FX Bass series features not only a deep-V twenty degree deadrise hull for a smooth ride but a centre keel pad for getting right up on top of the water quickly and for high speed with minimal drag.

In true bass tournament design, the FX20 features a huge foredeck casting platform plus a smaller stern casting platform and a cockpit designed for two persons. The aerodynamic “floating” starboard side driver’s console features a front-and-centre very prominent and standard equipment Humminbird® Solix® 12-inch CHIRP MEGA Sl in-dash graph GPS with temperature and networking and of course split screen for sonar and navigation. This may be optionally upgraded to a 15-inch model.

Digital gauges are provided for readouts from the standard Yamaha V MAX SHO® VF 250 horsepower outboard, the only and in fact the maximum power available for the FX20. A tinted windscreen provides some wind protection for the driver while a “Hot Foot Throttle” with slide and Pro Trim tempt his right foot and a molded-in footrest at the same angle braces his left foot.

Both driver and passenger are well supported with high back bolstered bucket-style Full-Flex four coloured sport seats. Between these two seats is the step up to the aft casting deck. Within this step are two cupholders plus a 37-quart ice chest under the lid. The passenger gets his own top-loading glove box. More storage is within the step up to the bow casting platform while beside the step is a pull-out bass measuring tray.

Over two-thirds of the port side of the bow casting platform is devoted to an in-floor integrated rod storage compartment for longer rods and with protective tubes. On the starboard side of the platform is a similar but shorter rod storage compartment and behind it and ahead of the driver’s console is a general item storage compartment. Centred within the bow casting platform is a huge in-floor compartment dedicated to the organized storage of a dozen tackle boxes. Most storage compartments have gas strut assisted lids.

The forward section of the bow platform is standard equipped with one of two in-floor mounting bases for a removable bike seat with power pedestal. The second base for the second supplied seat and pedestal is in the stern platform. Ahead of this are the recessed in-floor controls for the standard Minn Kota® Fortrex 112 trolling motor with a 45-inch shaft. This may be optionally upgraded to a 52-inch shaft or to a 45 or 52-inch Ultrex 112 unit.

At the bow is a Humminbird® Solix® 10-inch graph similar to the in-dash unit and itself may be upgraded to a 12-inch unit. The stern casting deck features side-by-side livewells with Oxygenator aeration system. These livewells are flanked by a pair of in-floor general storage compartments. A 12-inch manual motor jackplate is standard as is a flip-out emergency re-boarding ladder.

Other notable standard equipment includes a classy tandem axle Skeeter Built™ FX custom Touring trailer, three rod Staze, custom tool holders, custom bump stick with holder, and dry dock ventilation system. Notable options include two black 8-foot PowerPole blades, Hamby keel protector, passenger console, extra fishing seat with pedestal, Helix® or Solix® side-imaging pre-wiring, Humminbird® or Lowrance® bow and/or stern network cable, Fusion stereo with two speakers, and black boat and/or engine covers.

Tournament fishermen want sharp looking rigs and Skeeter offers them just that in the FX20 with a choice of basic white or grey gelcoat colours and twenty-six metal flake hullside colours. Then you have the exact same choices to make for your hull accent colours, hull pro stripe colour, and double S colour. After that you choose your metal flake hull pin colour and you can have the hull bottom in white, grey, or black gelcoat. When you are all done, you will have one of the sharpest looking boats on your lake, in your driveway, or in the next tournament.

The FX20 exudes Skeeter’s moniker of “Eat. Sleep. Fish.” Lots of standard equipment and lots of available upgrades all dedicated to the hardcore fishing enthusiast.
