Boat Review by: Richard Crowder
Tiara’s relatively new Sport series consists of five models in two configurations: LS (Luxury Sport) and LX (Luxury Crossover). All five are strictly outboard powered and all offer bow seating as well as sleeping accommodation below. Tiara offers eight additional models of Open, Coupe, and Flybridge cruisers from thirty-nine to fifty-three feet.
The two LX Sport models in thirty-four and thirty-eight feet offer the more conventional helm, cockpit seating, and entertaining layout of a traditional cruiser with centre windshield walk-through to the bow seating area. The three LS models in thirty-four, thirty-eight, and forty-three feet offer a centre console-style layout with a side walk around to the bow seating area.
The 38LS simply exudes luxury and class everywhere. Starting at the helm console, a high one-piece custom curved windshield with a single full-sweep articulated wiper with washer integrates with the standard full-beam hardtop. The black on grey dash is functional yet gorgeous. Standard twin Garmin® 16-inch GPSMAP displays fill the upper portion while below them are a row of stainless pushbutton DC switches set into a full-width polished teak panel.
The electric adjustable centreline helm seat with flip-up forward bolster and armrests is flanked by identical but fixed companion seats. A full-width teak footrest serves all three seats while a fold-down fibreglass floor platform provides extra standing height. The helm seat faces a custom wrapped steering wheel with Teleflex® sport tilting hydraulic helm. Garmin® autopilot and VHF radio are standard as is a Fusion® Premium stereo with amplifier, dual remotes, and fourteen JL speakers. Joystick steering is available with all engine choices.
Storage is provided beneath all three helm seats or the space can be optionally filled with an icemaker and/or refrigerator and/or freezer. Above the helm is a molded overhead electronic mounting surface within the hardtop and a three-piece skylight with opening centre hatch. The helm passengers luxuriate with their own standard reverse cycle air conditioning/heating system.
Aft of the helm seats is a mid-cockpit galley with Corian® countertop, sink and faucet, cutting board, trash receptacle, and centre drawer with a refrigerator below. This is flanked by a pair of aft-facing seats with storage below. This galley may be optionally upgraded with a Kenyon® electric grill.
A standard Makefast® Marine retractable electric sunshade protects the unique U-shaped manually rotating cockpit lounge. The lounge has storage beneath and a high gloss folding teak table which may be lowered to transform this into a large sunlounge. Yes, this entire lounge may face forward or be easily rotated 180-degrees to face aft when stopped. Port and starboard transom doors lead to the swim platform extensions flanking the motors. The port side extension features an in-hull pullout flip-down boarding ladder.
A starboard side companionway leads past the helm to the athwartship U-shaped bow seating area. A foredeck anchor locker with thru-stem anchor with windlass is standard and may be optionally upgraded with all chain and dash remote. A foredeck portable sunshade and a bow table are optionally available.
On the port side of the helm area, steps lead to a side platform made to improve access to and from high docks. A port side molded acrylic sliding cabin door within the helm console leads to the cabin below with solid teak flooring. A full berth with innerspring mattress and complimenting coverings will coddle. Storage drawers, a cedar backed hanging locker, LED TV with Blu-Ray DVD player, microwave, and a dedicated air conditioning/reverse cycle heating system are all standard. A separate head compartment with stall shower, VacuFlush® toilet, sink, vanity, and storage are also standard.
Additional standard features include an Onan® 5kW diesel generator, bow thruster, auto-retracting trim tabs, hot water, transom shower, underwater lights, upholstery weather covers, and full boat-away package. Notable optional upgrades include a Seakeeper Gyro Stabilizer, radar, remote spotlight, SiriusXM®, custom hullside painting, fresh water and/or raw water washdowns, teak decking, and accenting upgrades.
The Sport 38LS was introduced to Canada at this year’s Toronto International Boat Show and was equipped with a pair of Seven Marine 527 horsepower supercharged and fresh water cooled V8 outboards with Duoprop gearcases from Volvo Penta®.
Power is also available from triple Mercury® 400 horsepower Verado 2.6L outboards or from triple Yamaha® 350 horsepower 5.3L V8 Four Stroke outboards. Individual manufacturer’s test results show that all three power choices offer relatively comparable cruising (35-39 mph), top speed (55-58 mph), and fuel economy (38-41 gph at cruise.)
The Tiara Sport 38LS is luxurious yet sporty and versatile as a day or weekender or cruiser.
