Boat Review by: Richard Crowder
The M-205 outboard bowrider is one of Monterey’s smallest of twenty-four models of runabouts, sport boats, super sports, and cruisers from twenty to thirty-seven feet. But, this M-205 is not only affordable, but is furnished with a standard equipment list that includes many of the features most desired by family pleasure boaters. It is one of ten models in the lineup that are outboard powered. Its sister model the M-20 is sterndrive powered.
The commendably deep-vee hull with air-assist chine notch comes standard with an Arctic Ice white gelcoat and attractive hullside spear-type graphics. There are eight additional colours available which may be had as a partial or full hullside colour and/or as a bottom colour and/or a combination. No two M-205’s on your waterways are likely to be the same. Most impressively, a vinylester hull barrier coat is provided standard. The hullside graphics may be deleted if you so choose. You may also choose from one of two upholstery trim colour choices: Anthracite or Havana.
The center opening of the attractively curved, tempered, tinted windshield with extended side wings leads to a U-shaped bow seating area rather than a V-shape to allow the beam of the M-205 to extend further forward. This provides increased seating comfort and roominess up front. Padded upholstered backrests on the front surface of each console allow for stretch out lounging.
Backrest coaming pads extend from each side around the bow to provide comfortable upright seating throughout the bow area. Dry storage is provided beneath each side seat cushion, and an anchor locker is found beneath the bow seat cushion. The hinged backrests on both consoles open to reveal huge storage areas within each console. Beneath the center opening of the windshield is a large in-floor storage compartment suitable for watersports accessories and much more.
Cockpit passenger seating is ample and provided by an L-shaped bench extending from the front passenger side console, aft along the port side and across the stern to the starboard side transom walk-thru to the swim platform. The front passenger seatback has multiple positions to accommodate front facing seating or rear-facing lounging. Storage is found beneath every seat cushion and a standard 48-quart portable cooler resides in one of these storage compartments. The passenger console is fitted with a lockable glove box.
The driver is provided with a comfy bucket style form-fitting seat with flip-up forward bolster and the seat swivels and slides. A sporty tilting steering wheel is augmented with standard hydraulic-assist steering. The modern molded black dash features a classy looking upholstered visor providing shade for the Medallion fog resistant instrumentation.
Centered ahead of the steering wheel is a large dual-function speedometer and trim gauge. To the left is a slightly smaller diameter tachometer with hour meter and to the right a multi-function fuel, oil pressure and temperature gauge. There is space to the right of that for the optional flush-mount digital depth sounder.
Also provided on the dash is a 12-volt receptacle as well as a dual USB charging outlet. The standard Fusion satellite-ready and Bluetooth compatible AM/FM stereo with USB port and MP3 adapter resides here and is complete with four Rockford Fosgate speakers. An optional stern remote control is available. To assist your day-to-day boating pleasures, you may also want the available Axiom GPS/chartplotter/Sonar screen added to the dash.
A full-width integral swim platform provides a starboard side concealed four-step telescoping stainless steel boarding ladder with a convenient hinged fiberglass cover. You may choose to optionally add Brown or Gray SeaDek inlay to this platform and to the cockpit. Woven flooring is also available for the cockpit. Also available for the cockpit is a table with side-mount pedestal base.
Other notable factory options for the M-205 is a hinged fold-down wakeboard tower in black or white complete with gas-assist struts for ease while putting it up or down. You probably also will want the optional removable ski-tow pylon and perhaps pull-up cleats. The only remaining probable optional choices include a bimini top, bow and cockpit covers, and perhaps a dual battery switch to accommodate a second battery and then perhaps a battery charger with deck plug.
Outboard power from Mercury or Yamaha from 150 to 225 horsepower is available with or without a white cowling. Factory performance tests indicate top speed to vary from the mid-forty’s mph up to the high fifty’s mph from this power range and depending of course on load factors.
Monterey’s M-205 outboard bowrider may be its smallest and its introductory boat, but it is built to the same detail and standards as the much larger boats in its lineup.
