Smoker-Craft 178

The Adventurer series is new to Smoker Craft and the 178 Pro DC (Dual Console) is all-new for 2021. This new model is one of nine available Adventurer floorplans of Tiller, Side Console, Dual Console, and Fish & Ski layouts in seventeen and eighteen feet. At seventeen feet, eleven inches and eighteen feet, eleven inches LOA (Length Overall) respectively, most would refer to these as eighteen and nineteen footers.

The Adventurer is one of fifteen series in Smoker Craft’s huge Fishing Boat category, which consists of fifty-two models from fourteen to twenty-one feet. There are also seventeen models in five series in its North American Angler category, and twenty-two models in seven series in its Utility Boat category. You would be hard pressed to find an aluminum fishing or family-friendly model that Smoker Craft doesn’t offer.

Adding the “Pro” designation to the 178 DC indicates the primary purpose is fishing, and it certainly lives up to this claim. For example, the rear casting platform is dedicated solely to fishing needs by eliminating port and starboard flip-up seating, and instead provides additional storage compartments and a nearly full-beam lockable forward compartment for additional rods, nets, or other long items. A 30-gallon aerated, timed, recirculating livewell with pumpout is also found within the platform plus a centred floor-mount base for a fishing chair.

Dedicated rod storage is found in a massive lockable compartment with twelve dedicated rod tubes located within the centre walkthrough. This is augmented by another dedicated lockable rod storage compartment built-in along the port side of the cockpit. A second 15-gallon livewell is found on the port side of the bow casting platform. The bow platform also houses three additional lockable in-floor storage compartments plus a centred floor-mount base for a fishing chair.

A unique addition to this model is the portable 13-quart Engel aerated baitwell carry-on cooler beneath the passenger console. Within the molded console is a lockable glove box and a built-in separate compartment housing a removable tackle box for those items wanted immediately at hand while fishing. An additional storage drawer is provided in the footwell of the driver’s console. The Adventurer 178 Pro DC is definitely equipped to make fishing a breeze.

A bow trolling motor mounting platform is of course provided and pre-wired with a complete control panel. A 45 PD trolling motor with quick disconnect is optionally available. The molded driver’s console is fronted with a soft-grip, tilting, sporty steering wheel. The instrument cluster contains two large diameter dual purpose gauges in a central pod with tachometer and fuel to the left and speedometer and voltmeter to the right. Three smaller knockout covers between these two larger gauges may be fitted with additional instrumentation of your choice including the optionally available digital depth sounder.

Positive action DC rocker switches are panel-mounted to the right of the steering wheel and the circular control panel of the standard Jensen AM/FM stereo is to the left of the wheel. Standard steering is Xtreme cable with hydraulic being optionally available. The flat upper right-hand side of the dash is reserved to RAM mount your choice of the optionally available Humminbird Piranha MAX 4 or Helix 5, 7, or 9 combination Sonar GPS units. The high curved windshield with centre opening walk-thru section provides great weather protection for passengers and instrumentation.

Four mounting bases for two contoured, padded, one-piece fishing chairs are provided within the cockpit. Additional chairs are optionally available with or without power pedestals. The cockpit floor is heavy duty vinyl for easy hose-down cleanup and quick disbursement of water by way of Smoker Craft’s full length cockpit draining system. All other inner surfaces are carpeted including the bow and stern casting platforms. Both sides of the cockpit have a full-length tow rail to assist balance and grip while stand-up fishing.

The entire inner gunwale surfaces from bow to stern consist of Smoker Craft’s proprietary Integrated Gunnel Track System (IGTS) to allow you to mount all manner of handy accessories such as rod or tool or cup holders, etc. You may optionally equip this track with the IGTS mood lighting system. The Adventurer 178 DC Pro rides on Smoker Craft’s new Vertex Performance Strake (VPS) hull on a wide eight-foot beam and features a V-Pad bottom section which “provides undisturbed water to the prop, faster hole shot, quicker time to plane, better stability and a drier ride.”

Even though rated maximum horsepower is 150, you may be totally satisfied with 90 or 100 of a brand of your choice. Two hull colours are available: Silver Metallic with either white or blue striping. To complete your boat for Canadian boating conditions, you may want to optionally equip it with a fisherman’s top or better yet, a full enclosure along with a snap-on mooring cover and/or trailerable ratchet cover.

The swim platform with flip-down boarding ladder would also make a handy addition. You may also want to explore the addition of the Yarblow Ventilation System which, by using pressurized air, is intended to ventilate and dry out the bilge and storage areas on board to discourage the buildup of mold and mildew when the boat is unattended. However you choose to equip this boat, it will provide you not only with hours of pleasure but will also bring out the hard-core angler in you.
