Boat Review by: Richard Crowder
Lowe’s brand new Bay 22 becomes the largest of three modified V-hull centre console Bay series models in 18, 20, and now 22-feet. A bay boat by definition is designed as a dedicated fishing machine primarily for larger but sheltered and oft-times shallow water with the capability of handling the bigger stuff when called upon.
All three Bay models are of all-welded aluminum with a hull gauge of .125-inches and hullside depth of 24-inches. All three feature a stable beam of one inch shy of eight feet. Cockpit depth on this 22-foot model is nineteen inches.
The Lowe Bay 22 is rated for up to a 200 horsepower outboard motor. As part of the Brunswick Corporation group of companies, Lowe has access to a range of Mercury® outboard power and offers a 115 hp ELPT FourStroke as base power from which you may upgrade to a 150 or maximum 200 horsepower Mercury® FourStroke.
The molded fiberglass centre console allows lots of deck room on each side to work and land your big one unimpeded. A clear acrylic windscreen provides some wind and weather protection to the two-person wide helm. A substantial U-shaped full surrounding safety grab rail offers protection for this windscreen while offering grab-rail security to both sides of the boat.
The two levels of the dash provide standard instrumentation on the left side of the upper surface facing the driver of chrome-bezeled large diameter speedometer and tachometer gauges and a smaller diameter fuel gauge. The lower of the two faces provides mounting for the steering wheel and binnacle mount engine control. A flat surface between these two locate a cupholder while the flat top surface of the dash is ideal to pedestal mount your choice of GPS / fishfinder screens.
Facing this dash console is a comfortably padded leaning post with seat and backrest and footrest, all for two persons. It provides a great vantage point from which to pick out any shallow reefs or “skinny” water. On the front face of the centre console is a single seat with padded seatback and hinged cushioned seat bottom providing access to storage below. Under the console battery storage is provided helping to keep weight centred in the boat.
Behind the seat back of the forward console seat you may want to add the optional convenience of several tackle storage trays neatly stacked obviously readily accessible. On each side of this forward-facing seat is a safety grab handle as well as a drinkholder. On each side of the console are three molded-in vertical rod holders and another four rod holders are located on the back of the leaning post.
Immediately aft of the leaning post is a 30-gallon aerated livewell flanked by a pair of jump seats with flip-up seat backs which, when snapped down, form part of the aft deck. Storage is found within these jump seats. In addition to this livewell is a bow-mounted 16-gallon baitwell. Also in the bow is a 60-gallon (8 cubic feet) insulated cooler / dry storage compartment.
Also up front are port and starboard locking rod lockers to hold rods up to 7’6”. To round out the standard equipment on the Lowe Bay 22 is the inclusion of a fold-down fishing seat and one Pro seat, both with stainless steel pedestal bases for mounting on the stern and bow platforms. Also included as standard equipment is a MotorGuide® VariMax V55SW trolling motor as well as a tandem axle 5000 pound capacity aluminum trailer with disc brakes, swing tongue, vinyl bunks, and LED lights.
The interior of the boat will always be bright white, but as an upgrade from the standard white exterior hull colour you may want to choose from four hullside accenting colours, or perhaps four full hullside and bottom colours, or even full camouflage with Mossy Oak Breakup or Mossy Oak Shadowgrass.
A Saltwater Package and a Stainless Steel Package are both available upgrades, and I would highly recommend the hydraulic steering and tilt steering options. Highly desirable Seadeck flooring on the bow and stern decks will act as both cushioning and anti-slip features. A protective bimini top option in black is available as is a mooring cover.
The two pedestal seats may be upgraded to Deluxe Centric in white or tan, and a Deluxe leaning post in white or tan is also available. You may want to upgrade from the standard trolling motor to a MotorGuide® X13-705W 54-inch, 24-volt unit, or delete the trolling motor entirely. Additional upgraded available accessories include an automatic bilge pump, 2 or 3-bank battery charger, a full Reflex Liner in tan with white or in gray with black, a six or ten-inch manual Jack Plate, or a ten-inch Atlas hydraulic Jack Plate all with Power Pole shallow water anchors.
Whether spinning or baitcasting, drifting or flyfishing, this Bay 22 offers you, the serious angler, a great platform from which to maximize your fishing pleasures.
