Boat Review by: Richard Crowder
New for 2024, and the largest of ten Grady-White dual console models starting at 21 feet, the Freedom 415 is said to be the largest outboard powered dual console boat ever built. It is also equipped with the largest percentage of standard equipment I personally have ever witnessed on a boat this size and the absolute smallest list of available factory accessories. Add your own electronics and you will want it just exactly like the factory intended it and it is loaded.
As with other Grady-White boats, the Freedom 415 dual console rides on the company’s much lauded and proven SeaV2® deep-vee hull design. At 21 degrees of transom deadrise, the Freedom 415 has the deepest deadrise of all ten dual console models and with its weight, length, bow flare, and cockpit depth, will no doubt provide a smooth and dry ride even in the roughest of waters.
It is powered by Yamaha’s newest and highest horsepower offerings, quad, yes four, XTO Offshore® 5.6 L direct injection, dual overhead cam, 32-valve V8 outboards each producing 450 horsepower at 6,000 RPM for a total of 1,800 horsepower. These new Yamaha’s come with joystick control and the new Helm Master® EX which features more than ten automated modes including the new DriftPoint® Track and the new Autopilot with heading and course hold. It also includes more programmed fishing functions as well as fully electric steering.
Also included is the new integrated, self-activated bow thruster control which compliments SetPoint® functions. A bow thruster is one of the many outstanding standard features on the Freedom 415. Another Grady-White standard feature with the Yamaha’s is the Siren Marine Vessel Monitoring System which allows you remote monitoring of vital functions such as battery level, water or contaminants in the bilge, shore power continuity, and conformation of the boat’s location. This is all done from your smart phone. It will provide alarms and will also allow you to pull maintenance records and remotely control on-board lighting along with other features.
As with other recent large Grady-White boats in this size range, there is no access like would normally be found aft through the transom from the cockpit to what would normally be some form of swim platform. There is no swim platform, as such, ahead of or beside the engines except for engine maintenance access. Handy water access is instead provided by not one but two dive doors and/or fish landing doors and/or boarding doors and/or watersports access doors, or what Grady-White simply calls cockpit side doors - one on each side of the aft cockpit and each with its own portable boarding ladder with dedicated storage.
On each side of the transom is a 35-gallon insulated raw water livewell, each with a light and 1500 GPH pump. Centred on the transom between these two livewells is a 459-quart insulated refrigerator/freezer fish box with two lights and digitally controlled thermostat. On the front side of the transom is a comfy two or snug three-person fold-away aft bench seat. Beneath and ahead of this bench seat are two very large in-floor hatches for mechanical and electrical access. A total of eight batteries are provided standard by Grady-White.
A full-height windshield with a pair of pantograph wipers with washers and with centre opening section, power-actuated centre vent, and a very classy wind door with aqua-coloured glass centre insert leads through to the full-surround and fully padded and upholstered bow seating. Both port and starboard side seating has storage beneath the cushions as well as cupholders and USB+C charging ports. Beneath the forward portion of each side seating is a 59-quart insulated cooler box. Two power-adjustable polished teak tables serve this bow seating area. A low profile safety grab rail is full length along each side of the bow seating. Ahead is the foredeck access hatch to the anchor locker with standard electric windlass with dual controls.
Above the spacious helm and passenger area with its tall windshield and side glass is Grady-White’s newest iteration of its AirView® hardtop called the AV²® integrated hardtop enclosure with painted aluminum frame and its signature powered sliding sunroof complete with screen and privacy shade. This hardtop is loaded with grab rails, storage net, nine blue/white LED recessed lights, storage compartment, four horizontal hanging rod holders, and a 24-inch powered fold-down LED flatscreen TV. That’s all on the inside of the hardtop. Outside is a pair of LED spreader lights, outrigger plates, four side-mounted rod holders, and an aft SureShade® electrically retractable cockpit sunshade with oyster-coloured Sunbrella® canvas. There is still room forward to mount your radar antenna should you so choose.
At the helm are a pair of electrically adjustable captain’s chairs with fold-down armrests and flip-up forward bolsters. There is a full-width molded footrest below the dash. The three-tier dash is fronted with a starboard-side Edson stainless steel steering wheel with power knob. To the right of this are the Yamaha engine controls and joystick. To the left of the wheel on two levels are the various dash controls and readouts for the Grady-White supplied standard equipment such as the Zipwake® auto-levelling dynamic trim system control, windlass, bow thruster, etc.
This area also features all of the DC toggle switches and the AM/FM stereo head control with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth® connectivity which feeds two subwoofers and eight speakers with LED lights. The helm also provides an adjustable 18,000 BTU helm air conditioning/heating outlet as well as a helm-mounted wireless phone charger and 12-volt accessory outlet. Grady-White leaves it up to you to later complete your boat with your choice of navigation/fishing electronics plus other niceties such as VHF radio, radar, sonar, etc. The eyebrow-protected top tier of the dash will accommodate a pair of the largest flush-mounted touchscreens or three smaller ones.
Aft of the helm seats is an aft-facing double-wide bench seat with fold-down armrests, storage drawer, an outlet from the helm A/C unit, plus drink holders and an accessory outlet. Opposite the helm on the portside are convertible facing companion booth-style bench seating served by a pair of independently powered adjustable polished teak tables. Aft of this companion seating is a cockpit wetbar/rigging station with a Dekton sintered stone counter top, teak-topped powered retracting bar storage door, electric grill, sink, refrigerator, cutting board, three storage drawers, trash bin, and blue/white indirect lighting.
With access through a lockable sliding door, the large portside console on the Freedom 415 features not only a bench seat with fold-down table and berth insert but also an aft berth. Indirect lighting enhances skylight natural lighting. Also provided for relaxing enjoyment are a microwave and a flat screen 24-inch LED-LCD TV with HDMI inlet. Solid oak cabinetry with caning inlays and teak wood sole add class and warmth. USB+C ports are provided.
Through another lockable sliding door, the starboard side console head compartment ahead of the helm provides a hand hammered nickel sink in a quartz counter top, VacuFlush® head with teak fold-down seat, shower, solid oak cedar-lined closet with caning inlays, teak wood sole, mirrored vanity with storage, bulk storage, and indirect lighting as well as skylight natural lighting. Both port and starboard consoles have air conditioning/heating outlets.
Additional standard equipment includes cockpit raw water washdown with powered Glendinning 35-feet of retractable hose, both forward and aft cockpit freshwater washdowns each with powered Glendinning 20-feet of retractable hose, the aft cockpit washdown to act also as a shower supplying both hot and cold fresh water.
Also provided standard are dockside power with galvanic isolator and 35-feet of powered Glendinning shorepower cord, a portable bow shade, Phender Pro™ quick release fender cleats, Reverso® electric self-cycling engine flush system, three blue underwater LED lights, a 12 kW diesel generator, and a Seakeeper® 6 gyroscopic stabilizer system.
The only factory available options are a choice of four hullside colours, 22-foot GEMLUX® carbon fiber outriggers, an ivory bow cover, and either an aft curtain or a Clear2Sea™ drop curtain.
Grady-White’s new Freedom 415 ticks all the pleasure boating boxes be they skewed toward cruising, fishing, exploring, adventure, entertaining, overnighting, or watersports enjoyment. This boat can do it all while bathing you in luxury and conveniences.
